Melissa McCarthy ad-libbed a line when she did a scene in the film, Bridesmaids. McCarthy has had a long, successful career, starring in hit television series like Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who?, and later in movies like The Heat, St. Vincent, and Ghostbusters. She won an Emmy Award for starring in the six-season series, Mike & Molly and was nominated for the Academy Award for her dramatic turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me? Of course, many fans know her as Megan Price in the hit comedy Bridesmaids, which earned her her first Oscar nomination.
The film, directed by Paul Feig and was written by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, is about the hilarious and crazy adventures of a group of bridesmaids in preparation for their friend's wedding. Wiig stars as the central character, playing the maid of honor to her best friend, played by Maya Rudolph, while the film also stars Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Chris O'Dowd, Jon Hamm, and Rebel Wilson. The movie is known for having many extreme and memorable scenes containing over-the-top humor with all of its bridesmaid characters, including McCarthy's foul-mouthed, flirtatious, and confident Megan.
In a PopSugar discussion with Octavia Spencer trying to guess their past films using iconic lines, McCarthy reveals that she made up a line during her first scene in Bridesmaids, where she talks to Wiig's character, Annie Walker, about a guy after finding out he is single, commenting that she would "climb that like a tree". McCarthy later says that she felt bad for the background actor playing the single guy who was passing by in that moment. McCarthy and Spencer star in the superhero comedy film, Thunder Force, directed by McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, which hit Netflix last week. McCarthy's full recollection of her improvised line can be read below:
I remember the poor gentleman. All he did was pass and I said that. He was just a sweet gentleman in the background and he made a cross in front of me and I thought 'That seems like the right thing to say.'.
It is no surprise that McCarthy is one of the most talented comedic actresses, having spent her career mostly in that genre. She further cemented her mark when she played former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Saturday Night Live, which also won her an Emmy. She has shown time and again that she is capable of making her characters unforgettable and larger-than-life, and the success of Megan Price in Bridesmaids would not be possible without McCarthy's comedic instincts.
It can be certain that fans of Bridesmaids are happy that McCarthy's improvised line made it into the movie, as well as every scene featuring her character. McCarthy has proven to be one of the most fearless performers and is not afraid to go the extra mile, especially with her physical comedy. While it does not look like a sequel to Bridesmaids will be happening, the upcoming comedic works featuring Melissa McCarthy are sure to garner excitement and laughs.
