NEO: The World Ends With You Combat System & Length Revealed

The new combat system for NEO: The World Ends With You has been fully revealed in a recent interview. The development team talked about the changes to battle and other ways the title has evolved from its predecessor. The full length of the game was also announced.

The original The World Ends With You, frequently shortened to TWEWY, is a 2007 Nintendo DS action RPG. It heavily features the culture and aesthetics that were present in Shibuya at the time of its release. The combat system used the Nintendo DS' touch screen to perform different attacks depending on what pins the protagonist Neku had equipped.  For example, tapping an enemy might throw fireballs in its direction. Neku's partner moved in tandem on the top screen.

In an interview with Famitsu (translated by IGN), game director Hiroyuki Itou explained how the new combat system worked. Psyche Pins are still a major element, but each character is only able to equip one. Each button is assigned to a different character. This allows for all party members to attack simultaneously in battle. The full length of the title has also been revealed to be about 50 hours. The original title could be completed in about half that time, so the added content should be very appealing to fans. NEO: The World Ends With You does not require players to have experienced the original, however. While NEO: TWEWY is a sequel, Itou has stated that newcomers should be able to pick up the story without any problem. That said, it is a continuation of the "A New Day" scenario added to the Switch port, TWEWY: Final Remix. Sho Minamimoto, a character from the original, also returns as a main party member.

Other changes and features were discussed as well. The city of Shibuya has changed drastically since the original game, and NEO will reflect this. There will also be new kinds of puzzles and missions in the overworld, alongside a new area to explore in Harajuku. Publisher Square Enix has also recently announced (via Stealth) that the soundtrack will contain over 50 tracks- 30 new, and 20+ returning.

It's clear that NEO is taking everything that made the original game so beloved and expanding upon it. The team working on it has put plenty of passion into keeping the spirit of the original alive while also adapting to NEO: TWEWY the new console generation. There are still a few months left before release, so it's hard to say if the hype is entirely justified. But the care put into bringing Shibuya and the Reaper's Game to life is evident, even from just a few interviews.
