Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has released a new set of tie-in merchandise, one of them offering the first look at the Mandarin, also known as, Wenwu. Played by the brilliant Tony Leung, the character will be the primary antagonist of the film which will debut Simu Liu as the titular hero. Destin Cretton helms the project that also stars Michelle Yeoh, Akwafina, Fala Chen, Ronny Chieng, Florian Munteanu, and Meng'er Zhang.
While Shang-Chi debuts in Phase 4 of the MCU, his origin film has ties that go all the way back to the first Iron Man. For starters, a cell of the Ten Rings was behind Tony Stark's abduction in Afghanistan after they partnered up with Obadiah Stane to kill the Stark Industries boss. Years later in Iron Man 3, the MCU's first Mandarin debuted in Trevor Slattery, but instead of the hero's arch-nemesis in the comics, it's nothing but a fake ploy to hide its real antagonist, Aldrich Killian. That didn't go well for Marvel Studios since the Mandarin is a prominent villain in print; now, however, they're ready to make amends with the upcoming introduction of the real version of the character.
Shared on Twitter by fan-account, @ShangChiBR are photos of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings action figures of Shang-Chi, Zhang's Xialing, and masked character known as Death Dealer. The most interesting toy from the line-up, however, is the Mandarin's, which is only named Wenwu. Check out the images below:
Previously slated for a July 2021 release, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has now been pushed to a September rollout during the Labor Day weekend. With just six months away from premiering, it's interesting that Marvel Studios has yet to properly start the marketing for the movie. Of course, there's still a possibility that it will be pushed back again depending on the situation with regard to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but aside from the logo and concept art, nothing has really been seen from the film just yet. Despite this, Liu promises that the trailer for the upcoming MCU project will be worth all the wait.
While not much can be deciphered from the images with regard to plot specifics for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it's worth noting that Marvel Studios appears to have updated their interpretation of the Mandarin's Ten Rings compared to its comic book counterpart. In the action figure, he's wearing it more like armbands instead of actual rings. Assuming that these action figures are accurate, it's a more practical way of sporting the source of his power as they can easily be concealed.
