The latest Call of Duty: Warzone update packs an all-new version of Verdansk which takes players back to the 1980s. The revised Warzone map includes plenty of new locations to visit, including several that are reinterpretations of classic Black Ops maps. Although not one-to-one versions, it's clear where the inspirations lie.
The new Warzone map released earlier today, giving players a wealth of new content to play with. Not only are there new locations, but the trailer confirmed there are new tools and gadgets such as an RC-XD, some sort of RC plane, and likely much more. There are surely plenty more secrets buried within the map as well, including homages to Black Ops history.
As the official Call of Duty Twitter page revealed in a new trailer, one of the many new locations on the map reworks where the dam used to be. It has now turned into a standard bridge that players can travel under, as the ice has melted away. Just behind the new bridge is a place called Gora Summit which is a callback to the beloved Black Ops map, Summit, which was a research facility with cable cars on a snowy mountain. In Warzone, the snow is gone, but the cable cars function properly. Another location in the northeast part of the map also pays tribute to the map Grid.
The new map changes to Warzone follows a nuke that wiped out the modern version of Verdansk as fans know it. So, many locations that were featured in the modern version still exist, but look very different. The airport has been restored from its heavily destroyed counterpart and many other places have a nicer, glossier look, seemingly untouched by warfare prior to this update. Overall, the tone of Verdansk has changed from a creepy, bleak-looking abandoned city to a much more colorful and lively place that will likely more closely resemble the original version by the time Activision moves on to the next large-scale update.
The next version of Warzone is expected to have ties to WWII, as Call of Duty 2021 is heavily rumored to be a continuation of Sledgehammer's 2017 title, Call of Duty: WWII. Whether or not this will invoke major new changes and innovations to the Call of Duty: Warzone formula remains to be seen, but it's clear there's a vision for the battle royale for years to come. It's not clear what Activision has planned for Verdasnk '84 in the coming months, but given how the last year played out for the original map, it'll likely be pretty special.
