In a new preview for Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon from Marvel Comics, Black Panther's General Okoye is getting superpowers. While the Immortal Iron Fist has been gathering allies to protect the dragons of the Marvel Universe, General Okoye has been given a different task. As a result, it certainly looks like Okoye had betrayed Iron Fist, and her killing of a dragon has certainly put her at odds with Danny Rand and his fellow warriors in the upcoming issue.
In previous issues - from writer Larry Hama and artist Dave Wachter - Iron Fist had been tasked with preventing the rise of the sinister and previously secret Eighth City, which seeks to grow in power by weakening the Seven Heavenly Cities by killing the beings which serve as their sources of power: Marvel's dragons. By defeating the great dragon Shou-Lao in his origins, Danny Rand gained the power of the Iron Fist, taking its immortal heart in his hands, which charged him with unique chi. The dragons also serve and protect the Seven Cities from all manner of threats, but the Eighth City has been dispatching agents and undead warriors to kill and claim their hearts for itself.
During the conflict, the Seven Cities began appearing on Earth and one of them emerged right next door to the Black Panther's kingdom of Wakanda. Naturally, General Okoye and Wakanda's forces were sent to engage the threat, which was when the mighty general was quested with a special mission from the Prince of Orphans, an ally of the Iron Fist. However, when Danny and his allies eventually found Okoye at the city named Heart of Heaven, she had killed its dragon and was holding its heart. Now, Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon #5 sees the general having some explaining to do, especially now that she's received powers from the dragon's heart, not unlike Iron Fist himself. If General Okoye has just become a new Iron Fist, as the preview suggests, then it's certainly a major upgrade for the classic Black Panther character. Will this be a new status quo for Okoye in the Marvel Universe, or will her new powers fade once the Heavenly Cities are saved? Fans will just have to wait and see when the new issue releases soon from Marvel Comics.
