Minecraft Hits 140 Million Players, 1 Billion Marketplace Items Sold

A recent Microsoft earnings call revealed that Minecraft has surpassed 140 million monthly players and 1 billion sales from the Minecraft Marketplace. The survival sandbox title, developed by Mojang, launched in early access back in 2009 and has since grown to become one of the best-selling games of all time. The title continues to receive new content from the developer in the form of updates and expansions.

Despite releasing more than a decade ago, the success of Minecraft continues to grow. Microsoft recently announced a new landmark for the title, with the game's Marketplace leading to the generation of more than $350 million in profits by modders. The Minecraft Marketplace, which launched back in 2017, allows modders to make money by contributing to the community as fellow players purchase their mods to use in-game. Microsoft gives around 50% of the profit to the mods' creators, meaning that Minecraft fans have earned more than $17 million through the creation and sale of mods.

Minecraft Franchise Fact Sheet released by Microsoft reveals two major landmarks reached by the series in April 2021. The fact sheet reveals that the game recently reached 140 million monthly active users, meaning that more people are currently playing Minecraft than at any point in the game's history. The sheet also reveals that the Minecraft Marketplace has resulted in the sale of over one billion unique pieces of content, contributing to the $350 million in profits from the sale of mods. These accomplishments help to illustrate the ongoing popularity of Minecraft more than a decade after the game's release.

The continued popularity of Minecraft is also evidenced by the game's loyal and active fanbase, as the creative nature of the game results in a frequent number of impressive in-game creations from this fanbase. A talented Minecraft decorator recently created a carpet based on the hide of the game's final boss, the End Dragon. This carpet is shaped and colored to resemble the terrifying beast, with wool blocks and carpet used to give the decoration depth and texture. The design is intricately detailed, including the use of the dragon's head to give the design a sense of realism and a three-dimensional quality. Another talented Minecraft creator recently carved an enormous statue of Vayne, a popular character in Riot Games' League of Legends. This dedicated creator built a time-lapse video of the carving process in order to give players an in-depth look at the construction of this remarkable monument.

It is impossible to deny the extreme popularity of Minecraft, with both new players and old fans making up the game's fanbase. 140 million players is an enormous amount, and 1 billion sales in the Minecraft Marketplace is impressive given the relative youth of the feature. With official updates still planned for the future, and the Marketplace allowing for the ongoing creation of fan content, Minecraft is sure to maintain its place at the top of the gaming industry.
