FF7 Remake: How Long It Was Between FF7R & Original Final Fantasy 7

Original Final Fantasy 7 fans had to wait many years to return to Midgar, as there was a massive gap between it and Final Fantasy 7 RemakeFF7 was one of the biggest games on the original PlayStation, yet fans had to wait until the end of the PS4 generation to play FF7 Remake.

FF7 helped bring the JRPG genre to mainstream attention in the West and solidified Square Enix (then called Square) as a major player in the industry. The importance of FF7 is hard to understate, and fans always expected it to be remade at some point. FF7 was developed at a time when Square Enix was still getting used to the 3D hardware of the PS1, which is why the visuals of the game were so inconsistent. Even FF8 looked far better, and that was only released a few years later.

Square Enix teased FF7 fans for years with hints about a remake, including a PS3 tech demo that showed the intro scene using the power of the new hardware. The long-awaited news finally arrived at E3 2015, when Square Enix announced FF7 Remake was coming to PS4. Though the company didn't say exactly when, fans assumed it wouldn't be long, but it was actually still years away.

Final Fantasy 7 was released in 1997, making it 23 years between the original and 2020's FF7 Remake, which itself was released five years after its initial E3 announcement. It's even fair to say the wait isn't really over, as FF7 Remake only covered the first few hours of the original game's story. It's possible the Remake series could last until the end of the PS5's life cycle. The FF7 Remake sequel is currently in development, with no indication of when it will be released.

Not everyone was a fan of Final Fantasy 7 RemakeSome didn't like its shift to action-RPG gameplay, some didn't like the changes to its story, and some even felt mislead by its title. The original FF7 isn't going anywhere, however, and the remake hasn't replaced it in any way. Final Fantasy 7 is currently available on every modern platform, and Square Enix is likely to continue porting it forward for as long as fans want to experience that original journey.
