Kingdom Hearts is a crossover franchise created by Square Enix, combining Disney elements with the publishers' design philosophy. The game focuses on the adventures of Sora, Donald, and Goofy as they travel through different Disney worlds while also dealing with varying villains along the way. The villains of Kingdom Hearts range from Disney classics such as Maleficent to original Final Fantasy villains like Sephiroth. However, other beloved villains in Kingdom Hearts have made their way into the fan's heart and are enjoyed immensely within the series.
These are seven of the Kingdom Hearts villains that fans love. Minor spoilers for the Kingdom Hearts franchise will be present in this article.
7 Maleficent
Adapted directly out of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is the most prominent Disney villain across the Kingdom Hearts franchise. She's an evil fairy who wishes to spread darkness across multiple worlds throughout the Kingdom Hearts universe.
Unlike other Disney villains whose characters are near-exact copies of their original counterparts, Maleficent becomes different due to her direct connection to the story. As a result, Maleficent becomes as prominent of a villain as the heavy hitters in the series like Xehanort.
6 Sephiroth
Sephiroth is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy 7 and a reoccurring villain in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Similar to his Final Fantasy 7 counterpart, Sephiroth is quiet and organized with a desire to torture Cloud Strife. He's consistently a problem for Cloud and his team through most of their lives in the events of Final Fantasy 7.
However, his boss fights in Kingdom Hearts are memorable due to the power that Sephiroth wields, in which he can easily defeat the player with a flick of his wrist if they're not careful. From a story perspective, Sephiroth isn't as prevalent as Xehanort, but he is still memorable due to his Kingdom Hearts boss fight alone.
5 Marluxia
Marluxia is the main antagonist of Kingdom Hearts: Chains Of Memories, whose goal is to overthrow Xemnas within Organization XIII. Marluxia is calculating, manipulating Sora into becoming his puppet to finish his goals during Kingdom Hearts: Chains Of Memories.
However, Marluxia suffers from a superiority complex and doesn't hide his egotistical aspects from his enemies or allies. Marluxia's other memorable aspects are his design and a scythe which he uses as a weapon. Marluxia's manipulation of flower petals allows him to be dangerously versatile, creating clones or sending a swarm of petals against Sora.
4 Xigbar
Xigbar is one of the most compelling characters of Kingdom Hearts because he's cocky and relaxed while also being as calculating as other villains in the series. Xigbar is known for utilizing his intelligence and instincts to create an unpredictable fighting style for Sora and his friends.
Xigbar's trademark weapon is the Arrowguns which allows him to maintain an advantage from a distance, which can be challenging for any opponent he comes across. However, perhaps the most memorable aspect about Xigbar is the mystery he's bringing to Kingdom Hearts following the third game, leaving players questioning what the story will be going forward.
3 Vanitas
Vanitas is a unique villain in Kingdom Hearts because he's extracted darkness from Xehanort's former pupil, Ventus, which means that his abilities are just as dangerous as the original. However, Vanitas doesn't contain the same compassion Ventus has, making him an unsympathetic character in his personality and fighting style.
Vanitas is an aggressive character who is capable of employing numerous agile strikes alongside dark magical attacks. Additionally, Vanitas is a pragmatic and practical fighter who will exploit any opening that the opponent might have and brutally capitalize on the opportunity.
2 Master Xehanort
Master Xehanort is the main antagonist of the entire Kingdom Hearts franchise as he influenced every dangerous event in the series. Xehanort is calculating and methodical, as he planned most of Kingdom Heart's events to obtain absolute knowledge. As a result, his main goal resulted in numerous casualties all across multiple worlds throughout the series.
Xehanort's methodical and dangerous mindset also extends to his fighting style against the rest of the Kingdom Hearts characters. As arguably the most potent keyblade user to have ever lived, Xehanort switches between fast attacks alongside powerful magic to create an overwhelming force against Sora. All of this makes Xehanort an incredibly dangerous villain who affects several generations of keyblade users.
1 Xemnas
Xemnas is the main antagonist of Kingdom Hearts 2, and although he's part of Xehanort, his character and impact allow him to be memorable enough to stand out from other villains. As the oldest of the nobodies, Xemnas is devoid of all emotional feelings, which means he is very cold to his enemies.
Like other Xehanort versions, he desires power and can be just as calculating as his different incarnation. However, he stands out thanks to his ability to manipulate nothingness, allowing him to create ethereal swords and turning other organization members into dusks. Xemnas's famous for his final boss fight in Kingdom Hearts 2, which had Sora and Riku working together to defeat him.
