Sierra On-Line Founders Are Returning To Game Development

Out of nowhere, it’s been revealed that Ken and Roberta Williams, the legendary founders of Sierra On-Line, are returning to game development with a brand new, original project. The company was famous for creating amazing video games in adventure and point-and-click genres that are currently experiencing somewhat of a Renaissance.

Although numerous indie studios have taken to developing various point-and-click video games in recent years, it became obvious that copying the legacy gameplay of past decades might not be the best idea for the modern gaming industry. In a hilarious video, one comedian decided to highlight the slight absurdity of the majority of old-school games’ gameplay, particularly the bizarre mechanics of combining completely unrelated items to create something meaningful. Funnily enough, the legacy gameplay of such titles might experience an unlikely comeback from the genre veterans.

According to Space Quest Historian on YouTube, the legendary Sierra On-line is partially making a return as the founders of the company, Ken and Roberta Williams, have been secretly working on a brand new video game for half a year. Although quite doubtful, the breaking news has been confirmed by none other than Ken Williams himself in a response to the YouTube content creator. The veteran developer announced that the project will be revealed in the coming months, but there’s nothing to share publicly at this moment. The Williams will probably start recruiting beta testers for their game in July or August. Sadly, the legendary Sierra founders did not elaborate further on what the title was about, but at least they confirmed it is a single-player game that is starting as a small project with distinctive Sierra flavor.

For older generations of gamers, Sierra On-Line was a mark of exceptional quality. Starting back in the 80s, the developer/publisher was responsible for an extensive list of amazing video games most notably including the King’s Quest and Space Quest series as well as Al Lowe’s Leisure Suit Larry. One of the last times the industry heard of Sierra’s co-founders was in 2019 when Ken and Roberta Williams put their estate for sale. The house was actually a legendary piece of gaming history as almost every corner of the property was uniquely designed, capturing the long-forgotten atmosphere of the 80s and 90s gaming industry.

Since Sierra is best recognized for its work in the puzzle/adventure genre, it is highly likely that the newest title by the legendary founders will adopt a similar approach to gameplay. This assumption has already been somewhat confirmed by the first batches of information regarding the game, which probably means that the upcoming new title will be a love letter to all the old-time fans and adventure genre lovers. Additionally, the very precedent of veteran developers returning to making video games is extremely exciting, to say the least.
