Brooklyn Nine-Nine: 10 Unpopular Opinions, According To Reddit

Workplace sitcoms like The Office and Superstore have a certain appeal to them, possibly because of their somewhat accurate portrayal of their respective workplaces. In those shows, fans see people they identify with in situations they're familiar with and it makes those shows a little more special. While Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a workplace sitcom as well, it's hardly accurate as one Reddit fan pointed out, but fans still enjoy its comedic aspects nonetheless.

The accuracyor lack thereofof Brooklyn Nine-Nine's portrayal of the daily life of an officer of the law is one of many things discussed about the show on Reddit. The subreddit dedicated to the show is filled with discussions of the best and worst episodes, the ensemble of characters, and lots of unpopular opinions on storylines, character arcs, and other aspects of the show.

10 Jake And Amy's Romance Wasn't Good

The evolution of Jake and Amy's relationship from co-workers to a lovey-dovey couple is a big part of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Although they are wildly different in some ways, they're one of the best couples on the show. However, one Reddit user disagrees as evidenced by their comment highlighting their dislike of Jake and Amy's romance.

It took a while for Amy and Jake to finally admit they had feelings for each other and the slow-burn romance between them was something most of the audience enjoyed but someunderstandablyfound it frustrating. Most TV shows drag out the romance to keep viewers on edge before the satisfying "and they lived happily ever after," which was the tactic employed by Brooklyn Nine-Nine in Jake and Amy's case.

9 The Halloween Heists Suck

Every year, the core group of the 99th precinct partakes in a Halloween Heist. With each year, the heists get wilder and funnier and have led to some of the best-rated episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In fact, the audience always looks forward to the Halloween heist episodes and the show never disappoints.

Interestingly, some fans don't like these episodes as one Redditor stated that those are actually their least favorites on the show and always the ones they skip on a rewatch. The heists certainly bring out the characters' worst, competitive sides, leading to betrayals that can be painful and frustrating to watch so this opinion is understandable even if it's not a common one.

8 Jake And Amy Have Nothing In Common

Brooklyn Nine-Nine did a good job of showing each character's individualism. All the characters have unique traits, from Charles's yes-man tendencies to Rosa's reluctance to show her emotions. Jake rarely takes things seriously while Amy takes things a little too seriously.

Based on this, one Redditor felt that they were too different to be together. However, it can be argued that their differenceswhile significantwere a huge part of what endeared the two characters to each other. Over time, they adopted parts of each other's characteristics and became better versions of themselves with Amy becoming less uptight and Jake being more mature.

7 Gina Was An Amazing Person

Gina was notorious for her snarky lines, snide comments, and always making fun of Amy, Charles and others. The characters dismissed it as her regular behavior but most fans saw her as a bully and disliked her for it. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine subreddit has so many posts sharing the same sentiment that the opinion that Gina is awful is a popular one on the platform.

One user on Reddit, however, commented that they love Gina. It's easy to see Gina as a funny character by looking past her teasing remarks and focusing on the handful of times she saved the others or did something nice, so this controversial view is somewhat understandable.

6 Doug Judy Sucks

Doug Judy a.k.a the Pontiac Bandit is one of the most loved characters apart from the main ones. As he is a well-known criminal, his dynamic with Jake is an interesting one and never fails to end in laughter and tearsthe latter mostly for Jake when Doug ultimately betrays him over and over again.

Most fans enjoy Doug's appearances on the show, but one Redditor commented plainly and simply that he sucks. Doug's constant betrayal may be the reason for this view because after the first couple of times it became more redundant and expected than funny for some fans.

5 Jake And Sophia > Peraltiago

In season 2 Jake dated Sophia, a Defense Attorney, and it was considered scandalous at the time because they were typically on opposite sides of criminals. Jake arrested them and Sophia helped set them free. Their jobs were ultimately the major reason they couldn't be together. With Amy, on the other hand, the two had the same jobs and their passions and objectives aligned.

Still, there's a small population of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine fandom that shipped Jake and Sophia. The two definitely had good chemistry and similar characteristics, like their taste in movies and strange foods. If they had found a way around their work differences, they might actually have made a good couple.

4 Doug And Jake's Friendship Is Unrealistic

Doug's criminal ways make his friendship with Jake odd but enjoyable. Every time Jake catches him, he negotiates a deal to help him catch a bigger fish and then betrays him at the last minute. Despite that, Doug is practically Jake's unofficial best friend and fans love their dynamic.

One fan on Reddit pointed out that although they love the friendship between the two, it's unrealistic. While most TV shows require some level of suspension of belief to make them enjoyable without picking apart its inaccuracies, too much of that makes it difficult to enjoy the show as was the case with Doug and Jake.

3 "Now Number Five" Is Overrated

The funny Brooklyn Nine-Nine cold opens are one of the best parts of the show. They set the comedic tone for the episode, even though most of what happens hardly connects to the main parts of the episode. The cold open in the season 5 episode, "DFW" where Jake asks criminals in a lineup to sing "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys in order to identify a murderer is a leading favorite for many fans and possibly the first one that comes to mind.

Contrary to popular opinion, one Redditor feels that while that cold open is funny, it's severely overrated by fans of the show. There's a lot of hype over it that it may be too much and undeserved, even though most fans enjoy the scene every time it comes up.

2 "The Box" Is An Overrated Episode

With seven seasons so far, the show has over 100 episodes under its belt. Some of those performed better than others in terms of rating and one example is "The Box" from season 5. Jake and Holt spent the entire night trying to get a dentist (Sterling K Brown) to confess to murdering his partner and ultimately succeeded after some hilarious antics.

There were many reasons why this episode was popular, from the celebrity appearance to the bottle episode format and having the sole focus on one of the show's best duos. However, one fan on Reddit commented that it's a good episode but undeserving of all the hype or high ratings it gets. Their reasoning was that the confession was obtained in an unoriginal way that wasn't worthy of the "oh damn" reaction it got.

1 The Show Isn't Funny

As far as sitcoms go, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the popular ones. It's right up there with other comedies like The Big Bang Theory and Parks and Recreation. Many who watch the show love the characters and that it doesn't rely on a laugh track to be funny. Considering the passionate campaign for it to be saved after Fox canceled it, there's no doubt fans love the comedic police procedural.

However, one fan on Reddit disagreed with this opinion, stating that it's a terrible show and expressing their confusion over why people found it funny. Brooklyn Nine-Nine's style of humor may not be for everyone so such a controversial opinion is to be expected.
