Tohru Honda is one of the most kind and giving characters in anime. She constantly encourages and comforts her friends and selflessly gives her time and attention to people when they are feeling down.
However, there are also times when Tohru isn't particularly helpful and actually makes things worse for herself and the people around her. It would have been better during these moments if Tohru had just focused on herself for once rather than pouring all of her energy into helping others.
10 Helpful: When She Visits Rin In The Hospital
At first, Tohru and Rin's relationship starts pretty rockily because Rin does not trust Tohru and views her involvement in the Sohma family's business as intrusive. However, her opinion of Tohru begins to change after Tohru visits her in the hospital.
After Rin collapses from sheer exhaustion, Tohru brings her some food to help her feel better. When Rin states that she doesn't like the food Tohru brought, Tohru insists that the next time she will bring something Rin likes. On her next visit, she brings some jello, and Rin admits that it's quite tasty. From then on, Rin slowly begins to accept Tohru and over time starts to view her as a true friend.
9 Not Helpful: When She Tries To Hug Rin
Tohru can come on quite strong, and at times more introverted characters are repelled by her displays of affection. This is exactly what happens when Rin comes to stay at Shigure's house and Tohru attempts to act too casually with Rin before giving her time to warm up to her new surroundings.
Upon seeing Rin is in one of the house's empty bedrooms, Shigure yells loudly and runs forward with her arms outstretched. Rin becomes thoroughly spooked and dodges out of the way, which causes Tohru to run into the wall. At this moment, Tohru's enthusiasm was completely unhelpful and did more to close Rin off than to open her up.
8 Helpful: When She Connects With Kisa
In season 1, episode 18, "What's Important Is...," Haru brings an exhausted Kisa to Shigure's house. He reveals that Kisa ran away from home because she was being bullied at school. Kisa comes to and bites Haru, and proceeds to run off once again.
Tohru is moved by Kisa's pain, and together with Kisa's mother, she talks to her. Tohru talks about how she was also bullied when she was younger, and how she was afraid to tell anyone but felt better once her mom found out the truth. Kisa connects with Tohru at that moment and goes to her for comfort, and from that moment on the two have a sisterly bond.
7 Not Helpful: When She Embarrasses Hiro For Taking Her Notebook
Tohru keeps a photo of her mother, Kyoko, in her pocketbook, and as it is one of the only photos she has of her mother both it and the pocketbook are very precious to her. There, it's understandable that she becomes upset when Hiro takes her pocketbook and runs off with it.
When Tohru eventually catches up with Hiro, she pleads with him to return the pocketbook and photo. This only serves to egg Hiro on further, but when Kisa arrives and asks Hiro what he is doing, he becomes embarrassed and angrily returns the notebook. Tohru could have handled this situation in a way that didn't embarrass Hiro, which would have helped her win him over more easily.
6 Helpful: When She Stands Up To Akito
At the end of her their visit to the Sohma's beach house, Tohru and Momiji come face-to-face with Akito. Upon witnessing Akito slap Momiji, Tohru begs Akito to stop, which prompts Akito to reveal her plan for the Zodiacs. She explains that she plans to lock up Kyo and bind the others to her in eternal servitude.
As she is walking away, Tohru confronts Akito and tells her that her vision isn't really happiness. Unlike the Zodiacs, Tohru can stand up to Akito, and is not obligated to serve her. By coming forward and speaking her mind, Tohru shows that she is willing to protect the Zodiacs from Akito, and sets herself down the path to breaking the Zodiac Curse.
5 Not Helpful: When She Overworks Herself
Tohru acts like a surrogate mother for some of the Zodiacs and a big sister to others and is constantly cooking, cleaning, and helping out around Shigure's house. Due to all this extra work, she sometimes fails to take care of herself or stay current with her studies at school.
When Tohru fails a test at school, she becomes afraid that she will not keep her promise to her mother to finish school. Tohru frantically searches for ways to be more reliable, but she stresses herself out and ends up getting sick and fainting in the process. Rather than taking care of herself, she needlessly worries and ends up making more work for those around her.
4 Helpful: When She Delivers Arisa's Letter To Kureno
When it comes to her friends, Tohru is willing to do whatever it takes to help them. So it stands to reason that she willingly decides to sneak into the Sohma estate to deliver a letter to Kureno from Arisa asking him to get in touch with her.
Kureno has feelings for Arisa but is afraid to develop a relationship with her due to his proximity to Akito and their complex relationship. Despite her fear, Tohru manages to deliver the letter to Kureno and implores him to reach out to Arisa so that she knows he hasn't forgotten about her. If nothing else, Tohru is a great wingman and is someone you can count on to be in your corner when needed.
3 Not Helpful: When She Makes Kyo And Yuji Worry About Her During The New Year Banquet
In season 1, episode 8, "See You When You Get Back," Shigure tells Tohru that all of the Sohmas will be going to the Sohma estate for a New Year's Eve banquet. Kyo and Yuji don't want to go, but Tohru insists that they attend while she remains at Shigure's house.
On their way to the banquet, Yuji and Kyo run into Saki, who tells them that Tohru is likely to feel lonely, as this is her first New Year since her mother passed away. This revelation fills Yuki and Kyo with worry, and they both run back to the house to comfort the tearful Tohru. If Tohru had just been honest about her feelings beforehand she could have saved them both a lot of worry and time.
2 Helpful: When She Runs After Kyo
One of Tohru's finest hours to date occurs during the penultimate episode of season 1, "Let's Go Home." After Kazuma reveals Kyo's true Cat form, Kyo runs away in shame at having Tohru see him. Although Tohru is horrified by his monstrous appearance she does not hesitate to run after Kyo.
While Kyo initially tries to scare her off, Tohru refuses to back down and instead embraces him. Her touch reminds him of his mother and allows him to transform into his normal Cat form. Tohru's selfless act of love lets Kyo know that people can love him unconditionally, and is the moment that their relationship really changes from friends into something more.
1 Not Helpful: When She Visits Ayame's Shop With Yuki
For many years, Yuki and Ayame were estranged from one another, but that all changes once Ayame starts to make an effort to connect to his younger brother. While Yuki is hesitant at first and easily aggravated by Ayame's overbearing attitude, he agrees to visit Ayame's shop so the two can bond.
Tohru agrees to go with Yuki, but is essentially whisked away by Ayame's assistant and spends the entire time trying on cute dresses. While not unhelpful per se, her presence is completely unnecessary, as she is completely shut out of Yuki's and Ayame's conversation.
