Gilmore Girls: 10 Things That Would Be Different For Luke Today

Luke Danes is a charming and old-fashioned character on Gilmore Girlsand he fits perfectly into the small town that he calls home. While the quirky festivals of Stars Hollow might make Luke cringe a bit, he does love his fellow residents, and he especially enjoys serving them food and coffee at his diner.

Luke is famous for banning cell phones from his diner and for having trouble joining the modern world. He's not one for technology, and, when his phone rings in one scene in A Year In The Life, he looks at it like he isn't sure what it is. But, if Gilmore Girls was on the air in 2021, how would Luke react to technological changes? It's interesting to imagine what he would be like today.

10 He Would Have To Accept Cell Phones And Find Peace With Wifi

In A Year In The Life, Luke was still upset about people using cell phones in his diner, but they seemed to be able to use them, along with Wifi (although he gave wrong WiFi passwords, which gave him a lot of pleasure).

If the show aired today, Luke would have to go one step further and fully accept that his customers are going to be using their smartphones. He couldn't complain about people texting or staying too long, as it seems likely that there would be a customer backlash.

9 He Would Listen To Dating/Self-Care/Self-Help Podcasts

When Luke famously realized that he loved Lorelai, he was listening to a self-help book on tape that encouraged him to follow his heart.

2021 Luke would do something different; he would listen to a podcast on the topic, instead. Podcasts have been around for a while, but they have really gotten popular in the past few years, and it seems like this would be a much more contemporary way for Luke to get motivated and inspired to make a big change in his life.

8 He Would Have A Menu Of Healthy Superfoods And Fun Junk Food

Fans have some problems with Luke, but many feel that he was a great cook and that he ran a really good restaurant, and it would be interesting to see him bringing it into 2021.

There are two modern food trends that are the opposite of each other, those being healthy superfoods juxtaposed with over-the-top junk food. Luke would add both of these types of food to his menu, and he would have fun with it. It definitely seems likely that anyone heading to Luke's diner in 2021 could order some avocado toast or some burgers loaded with unique toppings.

7 He Could Operate A Food Truck In The Summer

While Luke isn't one to embrace many business changes, it would be hard for him not to do a few things that would move his restaurant into contemporary times and also be another source of revenue.

If Gilmore Girls aired today, it seems likely that Luke could operate a food truck every summer. He could hire a chef and some staff to run it, and it would be a great way for nearby towns to find out about his restaurant. This would also be a way for residents of these towns to try out his coffee, which the characters love so much.

6 He Would Have Stayed In Contact With Rachel Via Social Media

Rachel surprised Luke by returning to Stars Hollow, and this storyline would be different today, as Luke would have been able to stay in touch with Rachel through social media.

Maybe Rachel would send him a message every once in a while, and he would be able to follow along with his photography career and travels. It wouldn't be such a shock when she came back into his life, although it would still likely be dramatic.

5 He Could Raise Jess While Keeping In Better Touch With Liz

While Jess was pretty mean to Luke at times, Luke loved him and was the best parental figure that he knew how to be.

If Luke was raising Jess today, the experience would be much different, as it would be easier to keep in constant contact with Liz. Luke and Jess could talk to Liz on Zoom on a regular basis, and they would also likely be emailing regularly.

4 His Diner Might Become Famous

People love nostalgia, and Luke's diner is old-fashioned and retro enough that, if Gilmore Girls aired in 2021, it's possible that the diner might become famous. This would be thanks to social media exposure and online forums like Reddit where people can discuss any topic and connect with each other.

Tour groups might be attracted to the old-school charm of Stars Hollow, and they might want to visit Luke's restaurant, in awe of the classic menu of burgers and fries and coffee. It would feel like a breath of fresh air among modern fast food joints and fancier restaurants.

3 Luke Would Surprise Lorelai With Fun Virtual Events

These days, there are so many options for events that can be livestreamed, from comedy and improv to interviews with authors and other public figures, along with concerts.

Luke may have been a chill, calm person, but he was romantic, too, and he surprised Lorelai with dinner at a restaurant in a nearby town when they had their first date. Since they spent a lot of time at home watching movies and TV together, it seems like Luke would embrace livestream events in 2021 and surprise Lorelai with some entertainment that she would love—and talk through, of course.

2 Lane Would Post On Instagram While Working There

Viewers enjoyed Lane and Rory's long-term friendship, and Lane's character arc also included some time working at Luke's diner.

Lane was a hard worker with tons of determination, and it seems like, today, Lane would post on Instagram and get the diner some attention. Luke would be grateful, and he would be impressed by how well Lane did, and he might even let her keep doing that even when she went on to other things.

1 He Would Have A Better Understanding Of Surrogacy

Many fans didn't like how Luke had no clue what surrogacy was in A Year In The Life, and he made some comments about it that proved it confused him.

In 2021, it's definitely impossible to find the topic this strange and confusing, as there is a lot of discussion about fertility, surrogacy, adoption, and all the ways that people can have families.
