Apart from the debauchery, sex, drama, and scandal, Gossip Girl was and will always be synonymous with high fashion. Blair Waldorf, Serena Van der Woodsen, Jenny Humphrey, and Vanessa Abrams sported some serious couture on the show which made the mouths of fashionistas water. Costume designer Eric Daman was almost prescient with his impeccable styling of the ladies on the show — Blair's headbands, Serena and Vanessa's ultra-bohemian looks, and all the other outfits have aged extremely well since the first episode aired in 2007 until 2021.
There are some looks that stand out especially in today's fashion atmosphere; clothing choices that were ahead of their time. Several outfits on the show fit right into the style trends that are prevalent now but were less so back then. Scroll through a roundup of the most enduring style moments of Gossip Girl.
10 Big Collars
A look at any trend page makes it clear: the bigger the collar, the better. Oversized and embellished collars are everybody's current favorite, but Blair Waldorf wore it before anyone else. She was known to sport these often, but one of her two standout outfits was the flounced white top and skirt combo she wore for Cyrus' Passover dinner.
The exaggerated ruffled collar on it is an absolute dream. Her second show-stopping look was on the Met steps, where she wore a snowy cape with an oversized net collar with her uniform, paired with a bejeweled headband.
9 Peekaboo Lace
Serena's all-grey Zuhair Murad look was way, way ahead of its time. She has sported this amazingly flattering dress to the ballet. The unconventional draping, selective beading, and peekaboo, raw-edged lace detailing are something much more common in 2021.
The tone-on-tone styling and minimal accessorizing were also quite modern and chic, and a trend that cropped up a fair bit after the show aired.
8 Mixed Prints
Nobody does prints quite like the Queen Bee, and she was perhaps the pioneer of clashing prints in fashion. While she sported this trend a lot through the later seasons of the show, this look was exceptional.
The oversized art-deco type printed tie-up linen blazer juxtaposed with the ultra-feminine floral dress makes for a winning combination and one that truly stands the test of time. The big yellow bag pulls the outfit together well.
7 Slip Dress
Slip dresses are a modern staple in our wardrobes today, but that wasn't always the case. Wearing lingerie as outerwear is a newer concept now, but the Waldorf scion did it before it was cool.
Lacy slip dresses made it to her final looks very often, but this red negligee-inspired dress, with contrasting black lace, is her best look so far and telling of future trends. The net stockings add subtle elegance to this outfit.
6 Corsets And Net
In another prophetic sartorial moment, Serena appeared in a stunning corseted gown for Blair's wedding to Prince Louis as her maid of honor. It is no secret that corsets have made a splashy comeback, and this gown is the perfect mix of corsetry with layers and layers of gorgeous tulle and net.
The form and details on the It Girl's gown are definitely miles ahead, and the lovely dusty pink is a subtle nod to trending rose quartz.
5 Bomber Jackets
Vanessa Abrams may not be everybody's favorite character, but she nailed the bomber jacket trend years before it exploded on the fashion scene. In her wardrobe of kitschy clothing hung several bomber jackets which she threw onto her pop-hued tank tops.
Again, this was a predictive moment, and her bubblegum pink and blue satin bomber jacket look is straight out of a model's street style photo. Her black varsity-inspired jacket is also a win.
4 Oversized Tee & Boots
With the advent of normcore, wearing loose, oversized tees became trendy, but not in the Gossip Girl universe. Yet again, Little J's closet gave Billie-Eilish-like vibes with the huge white t-shirt as a dress and lacy fishnet tights.
The highlight of this look is the subtly chunky leather boots, which pull together this look beautifully. This futuristic outfit ticks all the boxes, sartorially.
3 Breezy Kaftan
Earlier, kaftans were reserved for beaches and vacations, but not for Serena Van der Woodsen. Known for her polished bohemian flair, she wore this kaftan silhouette dress when she was out and about the Upper East Side, paired with a chunky belt and oversized bag.
The abstract digital print and the breezy silhouette makes this a big contender for an outfit that was ahead of its time.
2 Leather And Layers
It's safe to say that Jenny Humphrey's style was edgy and in the best way possible. She experimented well with clothes, especially after she descended into her goth avatar. Her smart layering techniques were very fashion-forward.
The waterfall leather jacket, with shorts and fishnets, is an outfit that belongs several years after Gossip Girl aired, and don't miss the layered necklaces. The whole moto-inspired trend really shines in this look.
1 Patent Trench
Blair Waldorf takes the cake (as she always does) with this gorgeous patent leather trench coat, tights, and boots ensemble. What she wore to Constance Billard actually belongs to the runways of the future.
The glistening navy patent, gold buttons, and the custom fit are very 2021, as are color-blocked patent leather boots which finish the outfit off beautifully.
