Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard: Release Date, Cast, Trailer & Story Details

The Hitman's Bodyguard franchise continues with The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, and here's everything we know about the action-comedy sequel. As Hollywood becomes even more invested in known IPs and franchises, Lionsgate has found success launching new ones. The studio helped make Knives Out a new series and backed the continued growth of John Wick. Lionsgate collaborated with Summit Entertainment on the latter and the two companies paired up again for The Hitman's Bodyguard in 2017.

Starring Ryan Reynolds as a skilled bodyguard, The Hitman's Bodyguard followed Michael Bryce as he's assigned to protect notorious hitman Darius Kincaid, played by Samuel L. Jackson. It also featured a talented supporting cast that included Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek, Richard E. Grant, and Élodie Yung. The movie was made on a relatively modest budget and proved to be worth the investment. The Hitman's Bodyguard earned $176 million worldwide and Lionsgate moved quickly to capitalize on its popularity and get a sequel off the ground.

Announced in 2018, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard sees Patrick Hughes return to direct another adventure featuring the comedic pairing of Reynolds and Jackson. Here's everything we know about The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, including the sequel's release date, cast and story.

Lionsgate originally planned for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard to arrive in August 2020. Once COVID-19 hit and shut down movie theaters for months, the studio decided to delay the sequel a full year to August 2021. Lionsgate didn't stick to this date, though, and now will release The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard on June 16, 2021. The earlier release date reflects how more theaters are open around the world and capacity restrictions are lifting. Lionsgate held out to give the sequel an exclusive theatrical release instead of opting for a PVOD release during the pandemic or selling it to a streaming service like Netflix or Prime.

The cast of The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard once again stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. The sequel will give Salma Hayek a bigger role as Sonia Kincaid, Darius' wife, and brings Richard E. Grant back as Mr. Seifert, one of Bryce's clients. There are also multiple new additions, led by Antonio Banderas as Aristotle Papadopolous, who will be the main villain. The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard's cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Tom Hopper, and more.

As evident by the title, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard's story revolves around Sonia recruiting Bryce to help save Darius. While Bryce is an incredibly skilled bodyguard, he is on a company-mandated sabbatical when the sequel begins. He is not supposed to use weapons of any kind during this time, which complicates how Bryce will attempt to save Darius with Sonia's help. However, Darius told Sonia to get anyone other than Bryce to keep him safe. Part of the story also includes Sofia and Darius wanting to have children.

Lionsgate started the marketing campaign for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard in April 2021. Multiple trailers have been released so far that tease the wild action and comedic re-pairing of Reynolds and Jackson. The most recent teaser sets up Bryce being pulled back into the bodyguard world and working with the Kincaids to try and stop a cyber attack. With the same combination of action and comedy as the first, The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard's trailers make it clear to viewers this sequel is more of the same, which should be great news for those who enjoyed the original.
