Apple offers a few ways to block spam calls on an iPhone, although not all will be as useful to all iPhone users. In addition, some do require the downloading of an additional third-party app to help in blocking unwanted calls. Due to this, the right way to block spam calls on iPhone will depend on the individual user’s needs and setup, including the apps downloaded on their device and the carrier they use.
Whether an Android phone or an iPhone, smartphones can now do more than they ever could before. That said, the ability to make and take calls remains one of the most fundamental and useful parts of the smartphone experience. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most annoying due to the increased use of spam and marketing calls users seem to be receiving these days. While Android phones come with a built-in caller ID and spam protection feature, the options on iPhone are a little more complicated.
The easiest way to block spam calls on an iPhone is through Apple’s Silence Junk Callers feature. Added to iPhone with the iOS 13 update, this setting is designed to specifically identify unwanted calls and block them from reaching the user. Turning on Silence Junk Callers is easy enough and can be done by heading to the iPhone’s settings, followed by Phone and then tapping on Call Blocking & Identification and then selecting Silence Junk Callers. The problem some may encounter with this feature is that it does rely on carrier support. Therefore, using Silence Junk Callers to block spam calls might not be an option for all iPhone owners.
In the same Call Blocking & Identification iPhone settings section, there is also a more universal Silence Unknown Callers option. Enabling this will ensure that any call coming from someone that’s not already in the user’s contacts list, or haven't recently been contacted by the user, are blocked. As this is more of a sweeping solution, it may not be suitable for users who expect to get calls from numbers their iPhone won’t immediately recognize. Another, and possibly the best option for most average users, is to download a third-party app that’s specifically designed to block spam calls. Finding the right app for this will depend on the user, but carriers can be a good solution here. As an example, T-Mobile cellular customers can download the company’s Scam Shield app from the App Store and take advantage of various unwanted caller protections, such as Scam ID, Scam Block, and Caller ID.
In addition to finding the best and most reliable app for to block spam calls, the user will also need to make some adjustments to ensure the app performs as well as it can. For example, enabling Allow These Apps To Block Calls And Provide Caller ID for the app, so that it can actually detect and block unwanted calls. Enabling this settings needs to be done for each downloaded app and the toggle to turn on can be found in the same Call Blocking & Identification section of the iPhone settings menu.
