Black Widow has been delayed multiple times, but it’s finally nearing release, and it’ll be the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be released in over two years. That’s a lifetime for fans who are so used to getting three MCU films per year.
But as the excitement builds for the solo movie of one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, there are a select few who aren’t quite as thrilled. Between not wanting a Black Widow movie, criticizing her death scene, and questioning her relationship choices, there are so many hot takes surrounding Natasha Romanoff.
10 A Black Widow Movie Is Pointless
After having been delayed for so long, there is now so much excitement surrounding Black Widow that it has encouraged a ton of memes. But some fans don’t see the point of a movie based on the super spy.
They argue that if Marvel wants to expand on diversity, they should do it with other characters, such as Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, or Scarlet Witch. But given that the hot take was posted to Reddit five years ago, the Redditor was right on the money, as WandaVision has just been released, and both She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel are getting their own Disney+ shows too.
9 Scarlett Johansson Is Bad As Black Widow
With Scarlett Johansson’s first performance as Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2, she has been charming audiences ever since, but not everyone agrees. This user thinks the actor’s acting is subpar, and they genuinely want to see less of Black Widow not because of the character, but because of the actor.
But in reality, Johansson is one of the best actors working today, whether it’s her breakout role Lost In Translation, the chilling Under The Skin, or even her voice-only role as Samantha in the sci-fi romance Her. But even over all of those incredible indie movies, it’s almost unanimous that Black Widow is arguably her best role.
8 It’s A Good Thing That She Died
Where some were not impressed with how she died, there are others that are over the moon with her death in Avengers: Endgame. They claim that Natasha has no future in the MCU and she was simply a “sexy assassin.”
They blame the studio for sexualizing the character too much and not being as empowering as she should be. However, they do admit that the character’s backstory is the most interesting thing about her and that it’ll be interesting to see that explored in the upcoming solo movie.
7 She Works Best As An Ensemble Character
Backing up the fact that there shouldn’t be a Black Widow solo movie, this Redditor goes on to not only accuse the movie character of being uninteresting but the comic book character too.
They say that the character, along with Hawkeye, are better as ensemble characters, but they could be proven wrong on both accounts, as there’s also a Hawkeye Disney+ series being released at the end of the year. The user might have had a case to back up the argument in the early 2010s when neither of them was given much material, but in the years since The Avengers, they’ve both grown to have some of the most fascinating story arcs in the MCU.
6 She’s Useless In The Avengers
Being displeased with her performance as an Avenger, this Redditor hilariously states that Natasha got her place on the team thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation. They back up their argument by saying that Black Widow doesn’t have any powers, but in the grand scheme of things, neither does Iron Man.
They do admit that she’s a great spy and decent in hand-to-hand combat, but that’s exactly what she’s limited to. But she has proved time and time again how imperative to the team she is, whether it’s literally riding on alien ships during the battle of New York or sacrificing herself to save 3.5 billion people.
5 Black Widow And Hulk Made No Sense Together
There have been some weird romances throughout the past 20+ movies in the MCU, whether it’s Starlord and Gamora or Scarlett Witch and Vision, but a select few believe Black Widow and the Hulk were the weirdest of all of them.
However, they were never actually in a relationship, and how things ended between them is still up in the air. And though a minority believe the relationship didn’t make sense, it’s one of the things fans want to see addressed in her solo movie.
4 Her Fight Scene In Lagos In Civil War Is Bad
Though she doesn’t have any powers, her skills in hand-to-hand combat can often be more exciting than watching Doctor Strange build portals or Spider-Man sling webs. But there are some who think otherwise, specifically citing the opening fight scene in Captain America: Civil War.
The user notes that the scene hurts their eyes, but it’s one of Black Widow’s best sequences in the entire series. They blame the directing duo the Russo brothers, claiming that their direction of action is atrocious, but the very scene they refer to sees Black Widow fall into a tank and use one of Crossbones’ men as a shield to block a grenade explosion.
3 Black Widow And Cap Should Have Ended Up Together
Some believe that not only was the relationship between Natasha and Eric Banner weird but that she fell for the wrong guy. They argue that she should have ended up with Steve Rogers. And while it was looking that way for a while, and they even shared a kiss in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, they always remained friends.
Even later on in the same movie, Natasha hints at the possibility of being more than friends, and it could be that the Russian super-spy actually got friend-zoned by Cap.
2 Her Death Was Terrible
In the past, nobody has ever stayed dead in the MCU, and Loki has even died several times over at this point but he still somehow has a Disney+ TV series right now. But it was inevitable that there were going to be at least a couple of people in Avengers: Endgame that were going to kick the bucket for good.
One of those deaths was Natasha’s, who sacrificed herself in order to retrieve the Soul Stone, and it was one of the biggest tear-jerking moments of the film, but not everyone sees it that way. One Redditor argues that her death was terrible. And they don’t stop there either, as they say the same thing about Gamora too.
1 Sharon Unfairly Got Less Screen Time Than Black Widow
With Black Widow being so closely tied to Captain America, the Russo brothers are often in the fans’ crosshairs when it comes to hot takes about the character, as they directed both The Winter Soldier and Civil War. And this user blames the Russos for not using Sharon enough.
They argue that it was Black Widow’s fault that audiences didn’t get to see Sharon in action as Agent 13. However, the user will probably be smitten with Falcon and the Winter Soldier, as Sharon got so much more screen time in the series, and it seems like she’s going to be a major player in upcoming MCU projects too, based on how the show ended.
