Outer Worlds 2 E3 Announcement Trailer Knows Its Audience

After multiple whispers and rumors, The Outer Worlds 2 has officially been revealed at E3. The (then) hypothetical sequel to The Outer Worlds first came to the public's attention in October 2020, when industry analyst Daniel Ahmad disclosed that they had heard talks that a new game in the franchise was “being explored.” However, developer Obsidian Entertainment remained tight lipped about any of its future plans for the series at that time. This did nothing to squash the constant speculation surrounding The Outer Worlds 2, however.

The first game in The Outer Worlds franchise received praise when it released in 2019. The action role-playing game took fans into an alternate future, where they had to do battle against marauders and outlaws, along with several alien races, on terraformed and strange planets. While the combat could often be a little clunky, and lacked a certain amount of finesse at times, the actual story for The Outer Worlds was enjoyed by many, despite being a little on the short side. The game received several nominations for its narrative and writing after its release, and left many hoping to see more titles added to the series in the future.

And now, the rumors that have been swirling around the internet have finally borne fruit. At Xbox and Bethesda's E3 2021 showcase, it was revealed that The Outer Worlds 2 is in production, and will be releasing as an Xbox exclusive. Along with this announcement, fans were treated to a short but sweet trailer that didn't actually tell fans anything of consequence. In true The Outer World's style though, it was laced with plenty of tongue on cheek humor, making it well worth a watch anyway. The video's description however does reveal that there will be a new solar system and a new crew whenever The Outer Worlds 2 does release.

Despite not giving much away at all, this news is great for fans of The Outer Worlds. Even though a sequel has been suspected for a while now, it is another thing to have it confirmed by the developers. There have previously been two DLCs released for The Outer Worlds, Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos respectively, that expanded upon the game’s universe. However, the chance to explore The Outer World’s lore further in a full length sequel will likely allow the series’ dark wit to shine through and develop even more. This was something that was a real highlight in the original, and made The Outer Worlds stand out among other RPGs. It will also offer the chance for some of the original game's shortcomings to be improved upon for the latest generation of consoles.

So, fans of The Outer Worlds should get ready to leave the world behind once more. In the meantime, Obsidian Entertainment is also busy working on adding larger updates to its pint-sized survival game Grounded (which is currently available through Early Access), now that E3 is over. Obsidian is also developing its own vision on the Elder Scrolls formula, Avowed, which is currently in production.
