Fans of the hit Starz show Outlander know that Claire and Jamie Fraser have gone through many adversities in their 200-year love story. War, strife, kidnappings, and even time has tried to keep them apart.
But, there can be no denying their connection to each other; the two even notice as much when they're first married, sensing the magnetic attraction and trust between them. It's almost as if the first time Claire went through the stones—one of the many moments from Outlander's first episode which fans may have forgotten—she was being drawn there by Jamie's presence on the other side, even if she didn't know it because they truly belong together.
10 They Share The Same Values
A shared value system is important in any relationship; two partners sharing values will work toward the same goals and support each other's choices. Both Claire and Jamie are Catholic—or, at least, deeply religious—so their belief systems align.
In addition to this, they both greatly value family, honor, and loyalty. Claire and Jamie would both do anything to keep those that they consider family safe, and their fierce loyalty to each other has even gotten them in trouble in the past.
9 They're Both Stubborn
Viewers know that Jamie Fraser is hard-pressed to change his mind about things; once he has an idea about something, he holds it as gospel. That is until he meets the equally hard-headed Claire, and the combination of both of their very strong wills allows them to see each other's perspective on issues, like when Jamie refused to allow Fergus and Marsali to marry—sometimes cited as one of the worst things he did in Outlander—and Claire gave him a new perspective. He eventually came around to the idea, even if it took an episode or two.
8 They Have Physical Chemistry
Sex is a constant theme in Outlander, with the majority of the illicit scenes starring the time-crossed duo. While Claire and Frank shared a love scene or two, the Outlander couple never made much sense together, and there was never the palpable passion that there was between Claire and Jamie. Claire eventually—and a little toxically—needed to close her eyes and picture Jamie when she returned to Frank.
Claire and Jamie had physical compatibility from the very beginning, with Jamie even needing to ask if it was usual, or if he'd ever stop wanting her.
7 Passion Is Important To Both
Fiery personalities are definitely another thing the two have in common, and both have a history of fighting hard for what they believe in. Claire's passion comes in the form of medicine; a constant example of female empowerment on Outlander, she goes out of her way to exercise her passion for helping people.
Jamie showed that same passion when building their North American home or even exacting revenge on Black Jack Randall. Although sometimes their fierce passion can be at odds with what the other wants, they always try to find a balance to stay true to themselves and respect each other.
6 They Trust Each Other
"When you do tell me something, let it be the truth." Those words, spoken by Jamie to Claire, truly expressed the importance of honesty in their relationship. After Claire trusts Jamie with the secret of her time traveling origin in an episode often considered to be one of Outlander's best, they vow to never lie to each other.
"We could have secrets, but not lies" were Claire's words on the matter. Although sometimes the two stretched the definition of the word "secret," at the end of the day, they trust each other with their lives and tell each other everything in due time—even their darkest secrets.
5 They Take Care Of Each Other
Claire and Jamie have rescued each other more times than viewers can count, whether it was Jamie finding Claire on an island, rescuing her from capture at a British fort, or Claire saving Jamie from his capture or getting him released from jail.
Jamie, knowing that Claire took a Hippocratic oath to do no harm, vows that he will kill for her when she can't take her own revenge on her kidnappers and rapists. Likewise, Claire takes all of Jamie's pain and swears to bear it with him after his assault at the hands of Black Jack Randall, a villain with many horrible deeds to his name.
4 They Could Pick Up Where They Left Off
When Claire went back through the stones, she spent 20 years away from Jamie. After spending a lifetime apart, it would be hard to continue a relationship as if no time had passed. But, while there were a few hiccups when Claire returned, including their clumsy first attempt at a night together again, they were still just as in love with each other as they had been when she left, and that love was able to keep growing as they got to know each other again and build a life together.
3 They Allowed Each Other To Choose
One of the strongest moments in Jamie and Claire's relationship is when Jamie first leads Claire back to the stones to go back to her own time and Frank. He allowed her to choose what she really wanted instead of forcing her to stay or getting in her way trying to return to the 1940s.
She, of course, chose to stay in the 18th century and explore her relationship with Jamie, and he knew that she truly wanted to be there. Likewise, Claire returns to the 1700s with the understanding that Jamie may no longer love her and is willing to share news of their daughter and head back to her own time. He, similarly to Claire, chooses their relationship.
2 They Work Together As A Team
Claire and Jamie consistently work as a team to overcome any problem that either of them faces. They work together when trying to stop the Battle of Culloden, when trying to clear Jamie's name, and even when navigating the political climate in North America. Every obstacle is something they take on together, brainstorming with each other, and letting each other give advice when necessary.
1 Their Love Is Durable
Not many couples encounter the hardships that Claire and Jamie do in the series. They've both been attacked, beaten, imprisoned, and separated for large expanses of time and distance. They've even betrayed each other in different ways, but, no matter what they've gone through, their love has proven strong enough to survive.
Claire and Jamie have forgiven each other for wrongdoings, searched for each other when one of them was lost, and waited 20 years to be together again. Their love stood the test of time and tribulation, and that's truly something inspiring.
