Superman: Main Comic Book Villains, Ranked Lamest To Coolest

Every comic fan worth their salt knows all about the Man of Steel, about the iconic hero known as Superman. For years, Clark Kent has soared above heroes. And yet, only the worst villains are able to go toe to toe with the Man of Steel.

Time again, dozens of villains have faced off against Superman and only a few have been able to truly stand up to his might and power. Ranging from aliens with tremendous powers, enhanced metahumans, and even normal people, the Supes Rogues Gallery is not one to be trifled with.

14 Lamest: Toy Man

Now, every fan has their own personal favorite villain and as such, not everyone will agree with every placement. Yet, no one can really argue that Toy Man isn't a lame villain.

A man who tries to take down the Man of Steel with acid squirt guns and giant robots honestly doesn't really strike that much terror or fear into a person's heart.

13 Ultra-Humanite

Comics have really gone through changes over the years. Although the Ultra-Humanite, Superman's first villain, started out as a simple ape, he slowly evolved over the years to become a decent foe.

Despite still looking goofy and not evolving that much beyond the animated series, Humanite's been a good enough rival for the Man of Steel, the brains to his brawn.

12 Bizzaro

Clones and doppelgangers always seem to be a large part of the world of comics and yet, they don't always turn out that well like, Bizzaro Superman.

Over the years, Bizzaro's been updated and changed through comics, transforming from an alien from another world to a defective cl0ne, who became a surprising friend of Superman's. No matter the version, the doppelgänger with mixed-up powers ends up being a goofy and otherwise laughable villain for Supes.

11 Mister Myxlplyx

Extra-dimensional gods seem like they would be able to put a dent in Superman. Mister Myxlplyx, a trickster from the fifth dimension, has shown that he has enough power to turn Superman's entire world upside down.

Yet, despite his power level and abilities, Myxlplyx suffers from the weakness of his own name. Saying his own name out loud causes Myx to go back to his dimension, a trick he keeps falling for. So much for being an all-powerful being.

10 Metallo

Being Superman mostly means that the Man of Steel is invulnerable to everything. Well, everything save for kryptonite, which can easily take him down. This was one of the biggest obstacles Superman had to overcome when facing John Corben since this green rock had essentially become Corben's heart.

Equipped with other nasty abilities, Corben is a force not to be trifled with. Still, given the fact that it's a superhero comic, Supes always finds a way to beat Corben, diminishing his greatness.

9 Atomic Skull

Villains, no matter their past, do try to make amends. While Atomic Skull's been through plenty of changes throughout comics, he was almost always an avid rival of Superman.

When the Rebirth era of comics came around though, Skull seemingly gave up his past and tried to help Superman. Even with his intense powers, Skull ended up becoming Warden of prison before dying at the hands of another villain.

8 Manchester Black

Leader of the Elite has a nice ring to it. A group of metahumans who see themselves as being better than Superman, the Elite was led by the physicist, Manchester Black.

A powerful telepath, Black ended up being a recurring villain for Superman. Pushing to his limit and even manipulating his son, Black became a dangerous foe who was given an embarrassing end recently by having his mind transferred to a cow.

7 Parasite

Using the power of Superman is everything a kid dreams about. Yet, to actually take that power is something else altogether, something only a power-hungry villain like Parasite can do.

A literal human vacuum for power and energy, Parasite sees Superman as a buffet for powers. While he can become incredibly powerful thanks to the power intake, he can be overpowered despite his epic abilities.

6 Doomsday

No one can forget the time Superman, the unbeatable hero, was actually killed. When the monster known as Doomsday crashlanded on Earth, it went on a rampage, taking down several heroes and engaging in a vicious duel with Superman, which led to both of their deaths in the now-iconic "Death of Superman" arc.

While both came back, Doomsday has become infamous for his vile actions and his unstoppable nature. A nearly unkillable beast, Doomsday is a true force of nature that even Superman fears.

5 Mongul

Like Doomsday, the extra-terrestrial warlord Mongul is a brute. With his immense strength and a massive armored ship aptly named Warworld, Mongul could end up being just another Doomsday.

Yet, even with his strength, Mongul is still a cunning warrior. He once tricked Superman with the Black Mercy, trapping him in a dream world, and in the most recent comic arc "Warworld Rising," Mongul's utilized several Kryptonians to do his work for him. Not bad for an otherwise normal alien warlord.

4 Cyborg Superman

There's nothing quite like facing off against oneself. While Bizzaro is an imperfect copy of Superman, Hank Henshaw, the Cyborg Superman, is nearly perfect (save for his robotic half).

Created following Superman's heartbreaking death, Henshaw attempted to take over Superman's legacy in revenge for Superman not saving his wife and friends. As the years have gone on, Henshaw has been stuck in a neverending cycle of revenge, always fighting, never stopping, and never getting closer either.

3 General Zod

For a good while, Superman carried around the title of last of his kind. Over the years, that title would change as other Kryptonians like Supergirl and the feared General Zod emerged.

A survivor and former prisoner of the Phantom Zone, Zod is one of Superman's more evil villains. Possessing equal if not greater strength, abilities, and battle strategies, Zod has proven himself over the years and has come pretty close to beating Superman.

2 Brainiac

While fancy powers are always going to do one good, just pure brute strength and abilities are nothing against raw intelligence. The alien robot, known as Brainiac, has proven this time again, with his AI intellect and vicious nature always being a deadly obstacle.

Over the course of comics, Brainiac has evolved from a simple robot to a cunning and terrifying AI that collects whole worlds and studies them, including the Kryptonian city of Kandor that he shrunk and held captive for years.

1 Lex Luthor

In the battle of brains vs brawn, brains almost always win out. While the genius Lex Luthor is similar to Toyman in the sense they share no powers, Luthor's intellect and storied career of fear, powerplays, and genius moves make him far greater than any other.

One of the only foes who joined the Justice League, saved the Earth, becomes president, beats Superman on numerous occasions, and has a stellar animated career, Lex Luthor has become an icon among Superman villains and without a doubt, one of the smartest villains out there.
