The Conjuring 3's Elvis Joke Explained (Is There Any Truth To It?)

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It has a reappearance of the Warrens’ Elvis Presley infatuation last seen in The Conjuring 2, with Lorraine’s Elvis joke possibly adding a more intimate connection between the singer and paranormal investigators. The third Conjuring film takes Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) in a different direction from their typical haunted house demonic possession investigations. This time, the Warrens face a 1981 murder trial involving the dual possessions within one family of a demon conjured by a Northeastern occultist.

Ed and Lorraine Warren have taken on some of the most high-profile real-life paranormal cases in history, with their most famous case as the Amityville haunting - a horrifying supernatural event that spawned the Amityville Horror franchise with little mention of the Warrens themselves. As two of the most notable paranormal investigators of the 20th century, the married couple has inspired an entire 8-film Conjuring universe based on the documentation of their cases. Though the Annabelle doll has taken on a supernatural fame of her own, there are unfortunately no documented celebrity spirits on the Warrens’ case files.

While driving to investigate the occultist-connected murder of Katie Lincoln before the Arne Johnson possession, Sergeant Clay and Lorraine listen to “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley. Lorraine mentions that she met Elvis both before and after his death, leading to speculation of the claim’s truth. There is no definitive documentation of the real-life Warrens ever meeting the King of Rock 'n’ Roll before his death nor any conclusive proof that they investigated his ghost after 1977, but the two meetings still may be possible.

Lorraine discussing that she met Elvis before his death likely refers to meeting him at a concert or being introduced after the Warrens’ paranormal fame, which is possible considering the Warrens likely went to his concerts when Elvis was still at his height. Lorraine’s claim of meeting him after death means she perhaps conversed with his ghost at Graceland through clairvoyance or was asked to investigate celebrity ghosts. Considering Elvis is one of the most popular rumored celebrity ghost sightings, it’s not impossible that the Warrens, who may appear in The Conjuring 4, would have been called in to investigate if he truly was roaming around Graceland as many fans claim.

The Devil Made Me Do It isn’t the first time the Warrens have involved Elvis; Ed conjured the King when he gave a rendition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” to the Hodgson children in The Conjuring 2. Ed sees a guitar in the corner of their home and, knowing all of the sufferings the family has gone through with a child’s demonic possession, plays a heartwarming rendition of an Elvis song while summoning a fantastic Elvis vocal impersonation. Since the couple (or at least James Wan) is obviously a big fan of Elvis, it wouldn’t be surprising if The Conjuring 3 quip had some truth to it and the Warrens had actually seen him in concert sometime in The Conjuring universe and, after his death, decided to meet him again.
