Wedding Crashers 2 Updates: Story, Cast & Release Date

Here's everything we know about Wedding Crashers 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to Wedding Crashers, which can be found online. Released in 2005, the original film made nearly $300 million at the box office - a major return on the sizable $40 million budget. Wedding Crashers co-stars Vince Vaughn and current Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Owen Wilson as carefree playboys who attempt to settle down and develop meaningful relationships.

When Wedding Crashers initially released, both leads were known for portraying endearing yet snarky characters; a formula that worked wonders for David Dobkin's film. In the present, Wedding Crashers remains especially relevant and enduring thanks to supporting performances from Isla Fisher, Rachel McAdams, and Jane Seymour, along with complementary male appearances from Christopher Walken, Bradley Cooper, and Will Ferrell, to name just a few. Much like several other blockbuster comedies from the mid-2000s, Wedding Crashers became a pop culture event, like Finding 'Ohana.

Both Vaughn and Wilson are still relatively big stars, and their Wedding Crashers castmates remain popular as well. There's been plenty of speculation about a sequel over the years, but nothing has ever materialized. Now, there's evidence to suggest that Wedding Crashers 2 will indeed happen in the near future.

According to a June 2021 report (via Collider), a Wedding Crashers 2 script has been written but the film hasn't technically been greenlit. The original director, Dobkin, will reportedly handle the sequel and has indeed been scouting locations after releasing the 2020 Netflix movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. In the past, Wedding Crashers 2 never happened because Dobkin and company didn't want to recycle comedy from the first film, as the director confirms in a June 2020 interview (via Collider):

“Everybody keeps hitting me up about a Wedding Crashers sequel. We don’t have a script that we’re there with yet. For many, many years every year I got offered to do the sequel, there were some very big deals on the table. And none of us wanted to do a retread of the same movie again. Anything within those first years that we talked about was the same movie, and we were like, ‘Why?’ Financially I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I did (laughs). And Vince and Owen didn’t want to do it either.”

Wilson and Vaughn will presumably reprise their roles in Wedding Crashers 2, per the aforementioned report, however a deal hasn't been finalized. Similarly, the supporting players from the original film haven't officially signed on for a sequel. In December 2020, Academy Award-winner and dance maestro Walken and Seymour confirmed that they would return for Wedding Crashers 2 if asked, while Fisher stated that she's also interested in reprising her role:

“I would 100%, 100% be down. I think there is a ton of comedy to be mined in that set up. I think those two have such a great, natural chemistry. I loved playing a bipolar nymphomaniac. It would be really fun to go step back into that role that sort of made me lucky enough to be cast in fantastic movies like [Godmothered]. Yeah, it’d be great fun!”

The specifics of the Wedding Crashers 2 script haven't been revealed. According to a June 2021 report (via Production Weekly), the screenplay was written by Evan Susser, Van Robichaux, and Rob McKittrick, however New Line Cinema quickly discussed the article as "inaccurate." In the aforementioned June 2020 Dobkin interview, the filmmaker teases a possible premise for Wedding Crashers 2:

"‘Well I’d be curious what it’d be like for guys in their late 40s who end up being single again and have to go back out in the world. What a weird, difficult, challenging story that is... And as long as there’s a real story in the middle of it, to me, it can be a movie.”

Wedding Crashers 2 doesn't have an official release date. It's been speculated that production will begin in August 2021, however that hasn't been confirmed by New Line Cinema. If producers keep the same premiere schedule of the original film, then Wedding Crashers 2 could potentially release in early July 2022.
