Why Super Smash Bros Needs Tom Nook As A Fighter | Screen Rant

With Nintendo's E3 presentation only a week away, speculation abounds about who the newest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters will be. Nintendo typically uses large broadcasts to make such announcements to garner as much excitement as possible in the Super Smash Bros. community. During the 2020 Game Awards, Nintendo announced Final Fantasy's Sephiroth would be joining Super Smash Bros, and February's Nintendo Direct added Xenoblade's Pyra and Mythra to the fray. This leaves two open spots in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's DLC before the roster is full.

The Super Smash Bros. franchise is known for bringing characters from various game titles together. While the earlier installments focused solely on Nintendo characters, allowing Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Link, Pikachu and more to battle it out, later titles have brought in characters from other universes. Super Smash Bros. Brawl introduced Sonic the Hedgehog and Metal Gear's Snake to the mix. Over the past years, Ultimate has added such third-party characters as Pac-Man, Cloud from Final Fantasy, Minecraft's Steve, Persona 5's Joker, and many more.

Speculation about new characters that could be announced are primarily centered around Halo's Master Chief, though Crash Bandicoot and Monster Hunter characters are also popular schools of thought. However, none of these theories account for an obvious choice, a character who is a central figure in Nintendo's top game of 2020, the title that took the world by storm as stay at home orders went into effect. That character is none other than the bell-loaning raccoon landlord known as Tom Nook.

Tom Nook has already made an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though not as a playable character. He and his nephews, Timmy and Tommy, appear as part of the Smashville map in the game. Making Tom a playable character in Smash Ultimate is a natural extension of that cameo. Additionally, as a pre-existing Nintendo character, adding Tom Nook to the cast of fighters would be devoid of red tape associated with getting the rights to an external IP character. It would also be a tribute to the original Super Smash Bros. titles, which only included characters from the Nintendo universe.

His fighting style would also be unique to the Smash Bros. universe. While his base attack could be hand-to-hand combat, his special could throw turnips at other combatants, knocking them off the map. His ultimate attack could summon Timmy and Tommy, bringing them back into the Super Smash Bros. fray as well. His appearance in the game could pave the way for a new item, called the Repo, which would be thrown at other players in order to steal items they are holding. Tom Nook's addition to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster would undoubtedly break the internet and provide hours of fun gameplay for the community.
