What To Expect From Godzilla Singular Point Season 2

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Godzilla Singular Point.

The Netflix anime series Godzilla Singular Point season 1 ended with a thrilling finale, leaving audiences wondering what to expect from season 2. The series first began airing weekly on Netflix in Japan in March of 2021, and dropped in its entirety on North American Netflix on June 24. Although a second season is currently unconfirmed, the final post-credits cliffhanger of the 13th episode leaves the door wide open for a follow-up.

Produced by anime studios Bones and Orange in collaboration with Toho Co. Ltd, Godzilla Singular Point tells the globe-trotting, apocalyptic tale of a world beset by monsters whose appearance in civilization is triggered by the ghostly broadcast of a mysterious song. As new and increasingly dangerous kaiju — including a rapidly evolving, multi-formed Godzilla — begin making their presence known, it falls on a group of determined characters to solve the mystery of the creatures and find a way to avert a prophesized Catastrophe from plunging the world into darkness.

By the end of season 1, it seems as if the heroes have accomplished their goals. In a climactic final battle, Jet Jaguar reveals himself as the key to averting the Catastrophe and successfully removes Godzilla from play. Although the main story has reached a natural endpoint, the show ends on a cliffhanger involving a secret base, a character believed to be dead, and the construction of Mechagodzilla. Just where could this exciting plotline be heading in a follow-up season, and when can viewers expect Godzilla Singular Point season 2 to drop?

Netflix has not officially renewed Godzilla Singular Point for season 2; however, there's a good chance that the anime featuring Godzilla and his Showa series kaiju co-stars will get another installment. Heading into season 2, the production team behind Godzilla Singular Point will already have a great deal of groundwork laid. This means that a new season's developmental period will be far less than the nearly four years it took to get season 1 from conception to completion. If work begins immediately, a new season could air as early as late 2022 or early 2023.

In Godzilla Singular Point's post-credit scene, Mechagodzilla is seen being constructed by the shadowy organization behind the discovery of the Archetype particle. What's more, it's revealed that the mysterious Ashihara — the presumed-diseased scientist who predicted the Catastrophe — is in charge of Mechagodzilla's creation. It's possible that this mission to give mankind its own Godzilla to control is an attempt on Ashihara's part to better understand and harness the untapped power of Archetype. It's also likely that this new Mechagodzilla will be the catalyst that calls forth new monsters into the world. Those monsters could include new versions of Showa-era mainstays like Ebirah, Baragon, or Gigan, or even creatures from later Godzilla films like Biollante, Battra, or Megaguirus.

Godzilla Singular Point season 2 is also highly likely to introduce new creatures that borrow design elements from old-school Toho kaiju, just as season 1 did. As for Godzilla himself, season 2 will need to find a creative way to bring him back following his defeat. Could quantum-level time travel be utilized to resurrect Godzilla or to create an entirely new one? How will the Monster King react to the presence of Mechagodzilla? With any luck, Godzilla Singular Point will return for an epic season 2 to answer these questions and deliver another helping of science-fueled monster mayhem.
