To the surprise of many, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings features an incredibly lopsided Wong vs. Abomination fight. While both characters were confirmed to return in Phase 4, neither were expected to make an appearance in Shang-Chi’s movie - let alone be teased in a trailer.
For a while, it’s been speculated that Simu Liu’s Master of Kung Fu would be participating in an MCU martial arts tournament – and the release of the second Shang-Chi trailer has proven these theories correct. The footage shows Shang-Chi facing off against his sister, Xialing (Meng'er Zhang), in a cage match. But without a doubt the most shocking tournament tease came at the end when a comic book accurate Abomination was seen battling one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. His face wasn’t shown, but the trailer combined with a photo of Simu Liu and Wong actor Benedict Wong taken when Shang-Chi was filming leaves little room for doubt that the character is returning ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Abomination and Wong are obviously participants in a fighting event of some sort, but what’s not clear is why. Tim Roth’s Abomination, who must have escaped from incarceration between The Incredible Hulk and Shang-Chi, could simply be fighting for the glory and whatever prize is being offered to the winner. With his strength, he may see winning the tournament as an easy task, but with Wong, his reason for competing may not be so straightforward. As a Master of the Mystic Arts, Wong has specific duties to fill, and battling in an underground martial arts tournament doesn’t really feel like something he would do – unless the circumstances called for it, of course.
The tournament having a connection to the Mandarin (Tony Leung) and his evil empire could explain Wong’s presence in the story. The Ten Rings have great, seemingly magical powers that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) could have an interest in obtaining. With what they’re capable of, it could be decided that it would best if the Ten Rings were secured in the Sanctum Sanctorum where villains like Mandarin wouldn’t be able to use them. If so, Wong may have been sent on a mission to retrieve them. That would make sense of his decision to compete, especially if the Ten Rings are to be awarded to the tournament champion. Alternatively, Wong may have signed on as a tournament fighter so that he can infiltrate the Ten Rings organization, which the Masters may perceive as a major threat.
Regardless of what the reason is, it looks like Wong won’t be advancing to the end of the tournament in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. If the trailer is any indication, Abomination seems set to win and perhaps fight Shang-Chi in the next round. So if Wong really is there on a mission for Doctor Strange or the sorcerers, he may end up returning to the Sanctum Sanctorum empty-handed.
