10 Teen Movies That Never Got Sequels (But Fans Wish They Did)

It's frustrating when a good movie doesn't get a sequel. In particular, this is true for many teen movies that have been under appreciated over the years. Even if they have a huge fanbase, sadly, sometimes, the ratings and box office numbers for the movie don't allow for a follow-up.

In these cases, fans are left with burning questions relating to where the main characters venture off to next. What happens with the burning passion between the two leads in a love story that never receives its proper resolution? For these reasons and more, teen movie fans continue to hope and dream that one day, a reboot or sequel to their favorite teen film will make its way to the big screen.

10 The Hate U Give (2018)

The Hate U Give gained mass acclaim upon its debut, telling the story of police violence in association with black youth. The movie, based on the novel of the same name by Angie Thomas, focused on Amanda Stenberg's Starr Carter, who witnesses her friend get shot by an officer during a traffic stop.  After the system fails to convict the officer, Starr goes on a journey to seek justice with peaceful protests and becomes an activist.

The movie's popularity has fans wanting just a bit more of Starr's story after the movie's events. By the end of the film, Starr vows to keep her friend's memory alive and to advocate against police violence by "any means necessary."

9 The Goonies (1985)

The Goonies is more of a "child adventure movie," but it's still also categorized under the teen genre. The 1985 movie was about a close group of friends who make a brave venture to find a lost treasure to stop the selling of their homes. Fans were taken on a fun adventure as the children dealt with crooks and booby traps.

While the movie did incredibly well and became a cult classic on its own, fans often wondered why there wasn't a sequel. Rumors circulated for years about a possible sequel with the original cast, who were happily on board. Sadly, Corey Feldman, who played Mouth, has recently said that a Goonies sequel will likely never happen. Die-hard fans won't get to know how the child characters grew up after finding a historical treasure.

8 Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Bend It Like Beckham was a highly underrated teen movie from the 2000s that's a hidden gem amongst many fans. In the film, an 18-year-old Indian girl dreams of becoming a professional soccer player like her idol David Beckham. The movie resonated with fans as Parminder Nagra's Jess had to keep her new position on the national team a secret from her traditional parents.

The reason why many wanted a sequel is because of the movie's ending. Jess finally gets accepted by her parents and joins the American women's soccer team and gets her kiss with her cute coach, Jonathan Rhys Meyers' Joe. Fans were curious to know if she became a big star like she always dreamed of and if she ever returns to resume her relationship with Joe.

7 I Am Number Four (2011)

It's not surprising that a chunk of the teen movie genre is based on popular book series. Because of this, the first movie installment needed to live up to its source for the fanbase. I Am Number Four fits that bill, sharing the story of a humanoid alien named John Smith, played by Alex Pettyfer.

The movie was well-liked amongst fans, but it didn't do so well at the box office. As a result, the likelihood of an I Am Number Four sequel is slim, even though the film teased a follow-up by ending with John, two friends, and another humanoid alien driving off into the distance and vowing to protect Earth.

6 The Covenant (2006)

The Covenant is often deemed as one of the most clichĆ© and bad teen movies, but it still became a guilty pleasure in the supernatural teen genre. Sure, it follows many teen movie tropes - like the attractive characters, the evil villain, and the girl that needs saving - but most moviegoers didn't care. The story was satisfying for many, revolving around a group of male friends known as the Sons of Ipswitch who had powers due to being descendants of Salem witches.

The movie itself was never meant to have a sequel, but fans wish it did just for the sheer pleasure of it. Fans want to know whether or not the main character Caleb abuses his powers and if the villain really is gone.

5 Sky High (2005)

Leave it up to a group of teenage heroes and sidekicks to save the day in this original superhero hit from 2005. Many Sky High fans agree that it even still holds up even today. The movie had a fun charm, as the children of heroes and villains have to attend high school like everyone else.

Fans got their hopes up in 2016 when it was announced that early developments for a sequel were underway, titled Save U. Due to issues, the Sky High sequel was canceled and will likely never happen. Sadly, fans won't get to see if Will and his friends really do become the ultimate heroes.

4 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

When it comes to the ultimate nostalgic 2000s teen movie, 10 Things I Hate About You is at the very top. The movie had one of the teen genre's most recognized romantic stories and couples with Heath Ledger's Patrick and Julia Stiles' Kat. In the film, an uptight teen is swayed by the resident bad boy and falls in love, only to learn that it was all a game. Many wished for a sequel due to the movie's popularity as well as wanting to know if Patrick and Kat's romance survives college.

A sequel wasn't in the books but in 2012, 10 Things I Hate About Life was announced and suddenly disappeared. The movie wasn't going to be a direct sequel, but it would've been something. Still, fans at least got a reboot of the original movie with a television show in 2009.

3 The Breakfast Club (1985)

The Breakfast Club became a cult classic for many reasons, most notably due to its group of characters from different social groups who find common ground. Not to mention, the movie had one of the teen movie genre's most popular movie songs. Fans wanted a sequel for obvious reasons, since the conclusion was so open-ended.

Molly Ringwald's Claire and Judd Nelson's John share a kiss outside of school, as do Ally Sheedy's Allison and Emilio Estevez's Andrew. Just as the movie implied, come Monday, would these characters even acknowledge their new friendships? This is a question that has plagued fans' minds ever since. In reality, there are many reasons why a Breakfast Club sequel never happened due to a deleted scene and the director not wanting a sequel.

2 Beautiful Creatures (2013)

Alongside movies like Twilight and The Hunger Games, the boom of the teen genre is all thanks to already existing popular book series. In 2013, Beautiful Creatures was released, being based on the books by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The romantic gothic fantasy movie was about a new teen witch who must decide between succumbing to the dark or the light.

The movie was a box office bomb, but there was still hope among the book fanbase for a sequel after the film left off with Alden Ehrenreich's Ethan finally ridding Alice Englert's Lena of her dark side. Fans still want more of their story in the supernatural world on the big screen, but a sequel is unlikely.

1 Vampire Academy (2014)

Vampire Academy is one of those teen fantasy movies that really didn't do well but had a built in fanbase thanks to being based on a 2007 best-selling book series by Richelle Meads. The film followed a guardian known as Dhampir and a royal princess known as a Moroi, and these two female characters attend a secret vampire academy where they are put at risk by enemies within the school.

The movie itself left fans with many questions that never got answers. Many wanted to see if Zoey Deutch's Rose and her superior, Danila Kozlovsky's Dimitri, give in to their desires and form a relationship. Additionally, there was a cliffhanger where a former teacher turned into an evil vampire.
