A New Juggernaut is Coming to Marvel Comics | Screen Rant

A new version of the unstoppable Juggernaut is coming to Marvel Comics, as The Death of Doctor Strange kills off the Sorcerer Supreme and unleashes a wave of dangerous magical enemies onto Earth's heroes. Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 - from Alex Paknadel and Ryan Bodenheim - will see the Avengers attempt to prevent Cyttorak's newest avatar from destroying Manhattan.

Coming this September, The Death of Doctor Strange seems set to kill off the current Sorcerer Supreme, resulting in a spate of attacks by all the threats he once kept at bay. One of those threats will be a new Juggernaut - the avatar of the Demon Lord Cyttorak, granted magic momentum in order to feed his infernal master with chaos and destruction. While the X-Men's Colossus served as Cyttorak's avatar for a time, the god's usual servant is Cain Marko, the adopted brother of Charles Xavier, who recently rejected Cyttorak's control as part of his efforts to live a better life.

But Cyttorak is never without a servant for long, and it seems the new Juggernaut will be a huge threat that it will take the entire Avengers team to handle. This is particularly impressive, as the Avengers have rarely been stronger, including two cosmic powerhouses on their roster in the form of the new Phoenix and the child Starbrand. Marvel has shared the cover for Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 - along with a description of the issue - depicting a gigantic fist slamming down on Captain America's shield. The powers of Cyttorak allow the bearer to grow and even change shape as they cause destruction, so it's not yet clear whether the cover is figurative or the Avengers will actually be facing a giant version of the classic villain. Enjoy Marvel's cover and summary below:

Written by Alex Paknadel with art by Ryan Bodenheim, DEATH OF DOCTOR STRANGE: AVENGERS #1 will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face off against a rampaging new Juggernaut. Can they prevent the unstoppable being from destroying Manhattan or do they lack the magical expertise needed to find an answer?

The recent Juggernaut - from Fabian Nicieza and Ron Garney - saw Cain Marko fully reject Cyttorak's influence, finding an alternate way to reinvigorate his powers. Cain has rejected his dark god before, but the terrifying thing is that many of the bearers of Cyttorak's power have been heroic, twisted to destructive acts by the powerful deity's influence. The most recent Juggernaut appeared in the Heroes Reborn event, as an alternate timeline saw Doctor Doom acquire the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak - through which the bearer is granted unstoppable momentum - running amok as the planet's greatest villain.

If a truly evil person were to get ahold of the Crimson Gem, it's likely they'd be the most powerful version of Juggernaut yet. Even more worryingly, the Juggernaut is actually part of a process known as the Eighth Day, and intended to be one of several empowered avatars who treat Earth as their battleground. Cain Marko resisted that destiny, but if Cyttorak has found an individual with a weaker will, it's possible the Avengers will face not just one unstoppable force, but a larger war of the gods, as the beings known as the Octessence finally get the reckoning they desire.

Fans of the Juggernaut will be thrilled to know that a new version of the antihero is coming to Marvel Comics. Despite incredible powers and some surprisingly deep mythology, the Juggernaut powers tend to revert to Cain Marko incredibly quickly whenever he escapes them. Hopefully, Marvel are content with Cain's new status quo, and Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers can really explore what it means to go up against a villain who literally can't be stopped when the new Juggernaut arrives October 27.
