A potential crossover between Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Splatoon 2 is shown off in an adorable piece of fan art. The art depicts new versions of the various tools used in Animal Crossing. Each design is inspired by the weaponry used in Splatoon 2.
Animal Crossing is no stranger to tie-ins to Nintendo's other franchises. New Leaf in particular had a sizable amount of crossover items, ranging from Link's iconic attire to an Arwing from Star Fox. In a continuation of this tradition, items for Super Mario's 35th anniversary were added to New Horizons. As for Splatoon, a number of items from the original game and villagers based on Callie, Marie, and a generic Inkling were added in New Leaf's "Welcome Amiibo" update.
The fan art, posted by StrawberryInu to Reddit, shows off what New Horizons could do to reference Nintendo's flagship shooter. The six main tools used by players are shown, each with a new design. They also seemingly correspond to one of the main weapon types used in Splatoon. For example, the bug net is an obvious reference to the Roller family. The fishing pole, on the other hand, looks like the Splat Charger. Some are a bit more obtuse; the handles on the shovel and watering can match those of the Inkbrush and Slosher, respectively. The ax somewhat resembles the Heavy Splatling. Finally, the slingshot might be a modified Splat Dualie.
The Instagram version (posted to donut_animalcrossing) of the art has received over 1,000 likes at the time of this writing. In the comments on Reddit, one user suggested these tools could be used to promote Splatoon 3. StrawberryInu liked the idea and said it "would be amazing." Another commenter joked that hitting a disliked villager with a Splat Roller would be much more satisfying than a mere net. The artist agreed, especially if the paint/ink would linger on said target.
Many New Horizons players have been disappointed with the lack of updates recently. Additionally, the amount of crossover content is lacking compared to previous entries in the series. While fan art like StrawberryInu's is not a full replacement, it does offer some fantastic ideas for future updates or games. Tools already have a limited number of variations, so the crossover element would be especially appreciated.
It is entirely possible that more content - including items inspired by Splatoon - will be added in the future. For now, fan art and fanmade patterns and designs will allow players to imagine such possibilities and transform their islands into Inkling battlegrounds. Maybe Cece, Inkwell, and Viché will also return one day.
