Many of the special characters in Animal Crossing have a hidden history behind them, such as Tom Nook and Sable. Many of these are easily discovered just through dialogue. Others are more difficult to come across, though, and are vague at best. K.K. Slider is one recurring NPC with a somewhat mysterious background, though recently New Horizons has started to delve into it.
K.K. Slider is a mainstay in the Animal Crossing series, appearing in town weekly to play live music and offering copies of his songs to the player, who can then add it to their music library and access it from any of the in-game stereos. As of Animal Crossing: New Horizons there are 95 K.K. Slider songs that can be acquired, and each villager in the series has a specific song that will play inside of their house when players come to visit.
Like many other special characters in Animal Crossing, K.K. Slider returned in New Horizons. In fact, getting him to visit the island is one of the major goals at the start of the game. K.K. Slider only appears once the player reaches an island rating of at least 3 stars. Unlike most previous games, he plays in front of the Resident Services building, most likely due to the fact that The Roost has yet to be added to New Horizons.
Despite Brewster's absence in New Horizons, a reference to him still appears on the back of K.K. Slider's guitar along with a sticker of Dr. Shrunk. It's likely that these are referring to previous venues that he played at, as he could be found at both The Roost and Club LOL, and some think that dialogue in Animal Crossing: Wild World further hints that Brewster and K.K. Slider could be friends. To most of the other Animal Crossing characters, though, K.K. Slider is more of a superstar than an acquaintance. Tom Nook is a notable fan of his, and is the one who sets the goal of convincing K.K. Slider to visit the island near the start of New Horizons.
Contradictory to his popularity, though, K.K. Slider doesn't seem to associate closely with the rest of the music industry in the world of Animal Crossing. In Wild World, he states that he refuses to put a price on his music because it "wants to be free". He also seems to be a travelling solo act. In New Horizons, it's revealed that he started out playing a shoebox guitar as a pup, dreaming of hitting it off on his own and wandering the world, and in the first Animal Crossing game he can be found playing on a stool outside of the Train Station. Outside of that, though, K.K. Slider's personal history is largely a mystery, albeit one that could eventually be solved with the release of a new Animal Crossing game in the future.
