Grey's Anatomy: 10 Best Webber-Centric Episodes | ScreenRant

The long-running ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy has a stockpile of fascinating characters that tussle for a share of the screentime. Some have even had to be shed to make room for newer ones. However, a few characters have always had a secure spot on the show, and one of them is Richard Webber.

The current Residency Program Director at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital has been part of an ensemble in all seasons since the pilot, but viewers have also been fortunate enough to get a few episodes that specifically revolved around him. There's still a lot to come, as there are no signs of Webber leaving any time soon.

10 "Deterioration Of The Fight Or Flight Response" (S2 E22)

Richard had a lot on his plate; his niece Camille had been admitted after collapsing at prom, Burke had been shot, and Bailey had given him a hint about the LVAD wire incident.

The former Chief loves the hospital more than anything else, and he proved this once again here by prioritizing Grey Sloan over Camille. Worried that they would contaminate things, he chased away Camille's friends, who had decided to bring the prom to her. Richard's fatherly love for Burke also showcased itself once again. He had always seen himself in Burke, so he was focused on doing everything to make sure he didn't lose his arm.

9 "The Time Warp" (S6 E15)

Richard spent most of the episode in a frustrated state since he had thought he'd be reinstated as Chief when he came back from rehab. He also gave a powerful speech about his early days as a doctor when he and Ellis worked on the first case of AIDS, previously known as GRID.

The episode's flashback scenes were some of the best parts about it. The love between Richard and Ellis was explored in detail, with a younger Meredith even being featured. Viewers also got to learn the driving factor that made Richard so good at his job. After his AIDS patient died, Richard felt it was all his fault. He stopped seeing himself as "too good" and became keener on his work.

8 "Papa Don't Preach" (S16 E7)

Richard's niece Sabi and his brother Chris came to the hospital to seek medical help. They all hadn't spoken in five years, so it was time to not just treat, but also to address family issues.

Richard has never been known to be a reclusive person, but that part of him showed itself in "Papa Don't Preach." He had neglected his extended family because they felt he thought he was better than them. That he shut them out wasn't a surprise, as he has always been intolerant to lame behavior. On a brighter note, Richard has never been one to let personal feelings impact his work. Despite despising Chris and Sabi, he was more than willing to help.

7 "Hope For The Hopeless" (S8 E12)

It was a special moment as a party was held for Richard to mark his 10,000th surgery. As he was performing that specific surgery, a paranoid Adele who thought he was leaving her came to the OR and caused a disturbance. Seeing Richard with Meredith also reminded Adele of his affair with Ellis, one of the greatest betrayals on Grey's Anatomy.

"Hope For The Hopeless" was another reminder of how good Richard is at his craft. It also explained his "know it all" attitude and why it was important for other doctors to respect him at all times. His surgery statistics were way too impressive, and his composed nature was admirable, too. The unbalanced love between Adele and Richard came to the surface again too. It was obvious that she loved him more than he loved her.

6 "Seal Out Fate" (S10 E1)

All staff members frantically looked for Richard who had gone missing. They later learned that he had been electrocuted after going to set up the generator after a power outage caused by the storm.

It was a melancholy-filled episode as everyone crossed their fingers as Richard was wheeled into surgery and hoped he would recover.  It was in "Seal Out Fate" that the love for Richard became clear. Previously, there was the feeling that what his colleagues felt for him was fear, not loved. Even though the episode revolved around Richard, one of the saddest character deaths in Grey's Anatomy was tied to it, as promising surgeon Heather Brooks got electrocuted when she went to the generator room to look for Richard.

5 "Love Of My Life" (S16 E19)

Richard got admitted after he began mentioning strange things. Unaware of what's wrong with him, he attempted to escape from the ward. While hallucinating, he almost sliced open his own abdomen, thinking he was operating on a patient.

It was implied Richard's extreme dedication to his job had taken a toll on his health. Patients had benefited, and the doctors he taught had benefited, too, but his body had suffered. There has always been the belief that Richard cared more about everyone else's health but wasn't too concerned about his own, and this was confirmed in the episode.

4 "Only Mama Knows" (S11 E4)

Richard spent much of the episode reminiscing about his affair with Ellis in the early '80s. At the time, he was conflicted, worrying that they were doing the wrong thing, but Ellis was fully on board. He and Ellis made a pact to leave their spouses, but he dumped her, causing her to attempt suicide.

Richard has always been a firm decision-maker, but the memories portrayed him as regretful. He wasn't sure whether he handled the affair with Ellis in the best way possible. He was right to feel this way since his actions had led to Meredith growing up without a father figure and Maggie not knowing she was Meredith's half-sister.

3 "Snowblind" (S16 E15)

"Snowblind" featured one of the most memorable patients on Grey's Anatomy. Tess, a former medical student, grabbed a lab coat and pretended to be an intern. Noticing how well she was applying herself, Richard spent the entire episode mentoring her, only to learn that she was actually a patient.

Richard's understanding persona has never wavered, and, even after Tess was exposed, he wasn't angry at her. Impressed by her actions, he gave Tess the chance to continue learning. Mentoring is one of the things Richard does best, and he kept this up by not only encouraging her that her cancer would be gone, but he also made her promise that she'd continue pursuing her dreams once she was in remission.

2 "The Room Where It Happens" (S13 E8)

Meredith, Stephanie, and Owen were slowly cruising over a surgery due to fatigue, so Richard stepped in to help. He realized they didn't even know the patient's name or what caused his accident, so he tasked them with coming up with a fake identity for the patient.

Richard tends to embrace caution more than anyone else, and it was for this reason that he took over the surgery. The desire to teach has never left him, either, and, even though he was dealing with senior tired surgeons, he insisted on offering them instructions. At times, Richard's belief in his own abilities makes him look arrogant, but here, it helped saved the patient's life.

1 "Leave A Light On" (S16 E16)

Alex's departure from the hospital had Richard feeling sad. He was angry that Alex hadn't said goodbye to him in person despite the many great moments they shared. He thus aired out his frustrations during an AA meeting.

Richard's lamentations made a lot of sense. Alex had a lot to thank him for. He had given him several chances to prove himself when he was a struggling intern who could have been easily dismissed. The two also had a great time working together at Pac-North. In addition to that, Richard was right to feel that Alex was making a wrong choice by leaving because of family. He had been in the same position years ago, after all.
