The Big Bang Theory: 10 Things The Characters Said They'd Never Do (But Did)

The characters of The Big Bang Theory were, in general, creatures of habit. They ate food from the same place on select days of the week and followed certain routinesalthough this was mostly because of Sheldon. Once in a while, they'd deviate from these patterns and do something completely out of character, often with chaotic and hilarious results.

At times, this break in character behavior extended to the serious stuff, causing them to go back on decisions they'd made about their lives and futures. Other times, they got or achieved something they never thought was possible, leading to some of the best heartwarming moments on the series.

10 Leonard: Trust Howard With His Dating Life

During one of Leonard's single periods in between dating Penny, Raj suggested he should invoke his "Girlfriend Pact" with Howard to set him up with one of Bernadette's friends. Leonard refused and said he was capable of finding himself a girlfriend, but later caved in the same episode.

This actually wasn't the first time Leonard asked Howard for help with women, but it was just as disastrous. Considering how notoriously bad Howard was when it came to women, the fact that Leonard was asking for his help shows how desperate he was not to be alone.

9 Penny: Have Kids

One of the biggest conflicts of season 12 was an argument between Leonard and Penny regarding children. After a compatibility questionnaire had her questioning her feelings on having kids, she asked Leonard how he'd feel if they never had any. She finally came to the decision that she didn't want them and Leonard eventually accepted her decision. However, the season 12 finale revealed that she was pregnant and both of them seemed happy about it.

This one is a touchy subject with the fans who disagree with this ending for Penny. Some were okay with their favorite couple having a cliché happy ending but others weren't thrilled with the show's decision to invalidate their conflict over the matter especially since this was just a few episodes after she'd decided not to be a mom. In many ways, it felt like the conflict about children was added as a plot device and not as something meaningful.

8 Howard: Settle Down With Bernadette

During the early stages of their relationship, Bernadette asked Howard to define their relationship in the season 4 episode, "The Vengeance Formulation." When a week went by without any move on his part, Penny confronted him about it, to which he said Bernadette wanted a commitment and he wasn't sure she was his type or that he wanted to settle down with someone like her.

At the time, Howard had ridiculous fantasies about the kind of women he wanted to date, to the point that he was ready to lose a woman who was perfect for him over it. His objection to dating Bernadette barely lasted the episode though and eventually, the two of them got married and had kids.

7 Bernadette: Be A Mom

On more than one occasion, Bernadette expressed her dislike of kids to Howard while they were still dating and even after they were married. At first, she said it was because her mother ran an illegal daycare center in their basement when she was younger and later she said it was because she had to babysit her brothers and sisters all the time.

Despite her firm stance against having kids, she and Howard went on to have two of them. Although for most fans it felt like her change of mind came from nowhere, a conversation she had in season 9, episode 7, "The Spock Resonance" may suggest otherwise. In the episode, her father discovered she'd lied about Howard not wanting kids, leading to a discussion between the couple. This time around, she didn't flat out say no but agreed to think about it.

6 Raj: Have Love

After Lucy broke up with Raj in the season 6 finale, Penny went to check on him. He cried about not having love and told her that he was unlovable. Following the breakup, Raj had a lot more relationships with Emily, Claire, Isabella, Ruchi, Nell (very briefly), and Anu. Although the relationships didn't last long, there was love somewhere in there with some of the women.

Raj's wish for love was mostly tied to having a relationship like his friends had. By the time the series ended, however, he was single again. But, he realized that even though he wasn't in a relationship, he did find love with his best friend, Howard, and the rest of the group who accepted and loved him unconditionally, and that is the best kind of love.

5 Emily: Date Raj

Emily Sweeney's first impression of Raj wasn't a good one. She was already put off by his passiveness when he sent Amy to email her on his behalf, and him gatecrashing their coffee date only made it worse. Lucky for Raj, they met again a little while later and she changed her mind.

Although she initially dismissed the idea of dating Raj, Emily ended up becoming one of his longest relationships. They were different in some ways but got along well for the most part. In the end, those differences became too much for them and their relationship ended.

4 Stuart: Find Love

Stuart and Raj grew close while Howard was away, partly because they had a lot of things in common, like their struggle with meeting women. Since he wasn't part of the main group, his dating life wasn't shown much on the show apart from a few random details here and there. By the end of season 11, he was sure he wouldn't ever have a girlfriend until he met Denise.

Although his character didn't have a prominent role, the show did a fair job of showing some of his personal growth. At first, he was quite confident and even asked Penny out. But as the seasons progressed, he lost that self-confidence and could barely even speak to women. Once his store became a bit more financially successful, he regained some of that confidence, which was the same time he met Denise.

3 Amy: Coitus

Amy's debut in the season 3 finale led to some exciting developments, especially for Sheldon. After meeting Sheldon (and a few other times), she told him if they were to continue interacting, coitus was off the table. As Amy's relationship with Sheldon evolved and they continued interacting, that decision slowly changed, and on her birthday in "The Opening Night Excitation," the two finally did the deed.

Setting boundaries after just meeting someone was absolutely normal, but fans found it ironic that she was the one to lay down that rule given Sheldon's aversion to physical touch. At the time, their personalities were so similar that the others saw her as the female equivalent of Sheldon, but Amy changed much faster than he did.

2 Sheldon: Prolonged Physical Proximity To Amy

For a while, Sheldon insisted he and Amy would never be more than friends. In "The Desperation Emanation," he told Leonard he didn't like the idea of prolonged proximity to Amy when Leonard suggested that they spend more time together. A few seasons later, he was living with Amy, and soon after that, he married her.

Sheldon hated change and everything about his relationship with Amy meant changing, hence his attitude. It took a while for their relationship to move forward, but each step indicated how much Sheldon had changed. Even Amy's impact on his personal growth is reflected in this.

1 Amy: Get Married

Due to the slow-moving nature of the relationship, Amy sometimes questioned if it was going anywhere, which she told Penny and Bernadette in "The Locomotion Reverberation." In her wedding vows, she said she stopped dreaming about her wedding because she'd lost hope in the dream ever coming true.

Amy wasn't very sociable in the beginning and she didn't have any friends, let alone a boyfriend, so it's easy to see why she felt like she'd never get married. Her wedding is definitely one of the best "never say never" moments in the show.
