The Darkest Version of Spider-Man Is Back, Deadlier Than Ever

Warning: contains spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Scream #1!

Thanks to his connection to the "Spider-Verse" through the Web of Life, there are plenty of versions of Spider-Man in Marvel Comics, but the most disturbing - Doppelganger - is actually from his home reality. Taking place in the aftermath of Marvel's King in Black, in which the God of Symbiotes was defeated and replaced by Eddie Brock, Extreme Carnage: Scream #1 continues to explore Carnage's attempts to gather his fellow symbiotes and take Brock's new power for himself. Bound up in his quest is Alchemax, an evil company committed to studying symbiote lifeforms, and formerly the jailers of Doppelganger, who breaks loose this issue.

Doppelganger first appeared in 1992's Infinity War #1, created by the evil being known as Magus (and the artistic team of Jim Starlin, Ron Lim, and Al Milgrom), and is a vicious mockery of Spider-Man. Kept alive even when Magus' efforts failed thanks to its link to Demogoblin (later Demagoblin), Doppelganger has since been an ally to villains such as Carnage, Shriek, and Carrion, most famously in 1993's Maximum Carnage. When Carnage formed a cult to worship the God of Symbiotes in Web of Venom: Cult of Carnage #1 (2019), Doppelganger was among the members, though the creature has also enjoyed some rare heroic moments, standing against the Inheritors along with other Spider-Totems in Spider-Verse.

Extreme Carnage: Scream #1 comes from the team of Clay McLeod Chapman, Chris Mooneyham, Marcio Menyz, and Vc's Travis Lanham. It begins with Doppelganger breaking out of Alchemax, before being targeted by Scream - one of Venom's symbiote children. She is on the hunt for Demagoblin, but doesn't hesitate to fight Doppelganger before being interrupted by a special task force of Guardsmen hunting down "non-humans."

Doppelganger has often been shown to be incapable of speaking, though able to understand speech from others and even follow commands from Shriek. It is also one of Spider-Man's most twisted foes, with this issue showing how deadly it can be. Despite being immediately outnumbered, it easily snaps a Guardsman's neck, despite the advanced armor the attackers wear. Scream knows she can't hold back against Doppelganger and manages to subdue her foe, though ultimately it escapes once she is attacked by the Guardsmen. It seems highly likely that Doppelganger will seek out Carnage, becoming a new player in the battle of symbiotes that is Extreme Carnage's larger focus.

With Carnage running the show, Doppelganger is free to indulge in violence and destruction, and may even enjoy the protection of Senator Peter Krane, the leader of the extremist Friends of Humanity group, who has been possessed by Carnage as part of his dark agenda. Doppelganger will most likely be appearing in later issues within this symbiote-laden series, which should make for exciting action in the near future as this deadly version of Spider-Man returns to the comics.
