It has been more than a decade since the series last appeared, but many trading card and anime fans still look back fondly at Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. While many wouldn't mind Yugi's adventures against Seto Kaiba to go on forever despite being one of many Kids! WB Shows to go off the air quite some time ago, the original anime told the story it wanted to and saught to refresh things with a new coat of paint, much like the various upgrades to the card game itself.
The first of many series still going on today was Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. While the original series tried to be more competitive and serious, GX was a breath of fresh air, as it had its main character, Jaden Yuki, brighten up the lives of an entire school trying to take a children's card game too seriously. The Duel Academy was full of fan-favorite characters who, besides loving the card game, connected with the audiences with their goals and personalities.
10 Pig: Chumley Huffington
Who else could play the Pig sign of this series other than Chumley Huffington? All jokes aside, Chumley is the quintessential Pig in this series, not because of his eating habits, but because he's one of the most inherently kind and generous people in the franchise. Some fans will be able to connect with Chumley because of how nice of a friend he was to Jaden.
Others will connect with how naturally scared he was whenever Jaden got the Slifers into trouble. Even if fans didn't connect with Chumley that deeply, he was still a fun character and one of the few people to show the artistic side of dueling. It was truly sad to see the character leave.
9 Dog: Chancellor Sheppard
Chancellor Sheppard is both a shining example of what a good, school administrator should be as well as a good representative for the Dog signs. While this series will typically focus on the kids' various battles against other students and teachers—and creepy, magical cults—Sheppard was always trusted as the mindful watchdog of the school.
At one end, he'd be kind and supportive, helping students follow through with their studies. At another, he was a stable and reliable leader that the faculty could rely on.
8 Rooster: Tyranno Hassleberry
It makes sense that Tyranno Hassleberry would have such a strong affinity for dinosaurs given that Roosters are their ancestors. Tyranno Hassleberry is a classic Rooster sign; he's incredibly loud and self-centered, and rarely a day goes by without him challenging someone to a duel.
He's as competitive as they come, but he's still a reliable friend when the chips are down. Taking on a pseudo-military gimmick, Tyranno is quick to both lead and defend his "troops." In addition, Tyranno also has an eccentric, adventurous side that has helped fuel how prominent of a character he became after coming to the Duel Academy.
7 Monkey: Lyman Banner
Lyman Banner was both the ultimate teacher at the academy and a mastermind behind a massive twist in the middle of the story. Proving his Monkey sign stylings, Lyman was as cheerful and laidback as they came, surprising many given that he is a teacher. He's often seen chilling or looking for his pet cat, Pharaoh.
People shouldn't let that disarm them, however, since Lyman is also easily one of the smartest and wisest people with a deck. This wisdom would come back to harm Jaden and friends when Lyman revealed his true intentions as a Shadow Rider. Kind yet dangerous, it's immensely hard to tell what's going on behind Lyman's glasses.
6 Snake: Vellian Crowler
It's unsurprising that Vellian Crowler is the Snake sign of the series. As the most vengeful and opportunistic of the Duel Academy's teachers, Crowler is always waiting for his time to strike. Whether he's trying to find a way to higher his status among the school or looking for opportunities to prove how great he is to the students, Crowler is a vicious educator always looking to take and kill.
Backing up that demeanor is a genuine aficionado of dueling whose knowledge and tactical mind have genuinely earned him his place in the Duel Academy and made him a real threat as a series antagonist.
5 Tiger: Alexis Rhodes
Alexis Rhodes is both the Queen of Obelisk Blue and the Tiger—or Tigress—of the series. Much like a tiger, she's a proud and powerful force among the Duel Academy. As one of the best female duelists in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, she isn't afraid to take on any duels or defend her friends, and she's one of the most confident and resourceful duelists around.
Much like a tiger's eyes or stripes, she has a magnetic nature around her that's managed to attract everybody's attention. It's with the few people that don't look at her that she manages to find some real respect and admiration.
4 Ox: Bastion Misawa
Like an Ox, Bastion Misawa is focused, strong-willed, and a little hard-headed. As the resident egg head of GX, Bastion is the type of duelist to overanalyze every detail and condense it to one of his formulas that he swears his dueling career on. This has made him an intelligent and formidable opponent, albeit one that is a little too sure of himself.
Bastion's self-importance and sense of status are major aspects of his character as he tries to solidify his place at the top of the deck. That arrogance is what makes his later run so hilarious given the running gag that people keep forgetting him. It also makes his turn to the Society of Light all the more earned, though nonetheless tragic.
3 Rabbit: Syrus Truesdale
Just looking at his eyes, anyone can tell that fragile little Syrus is a Rabbit sign at heart. As Jaden's friend and sidekick, Syrus is one of the kindest and gentlest characters in the entire series. His timid nature may make him a reluctant cohort to most of Jaden's adventures, but his charitable side always shines through when his friends need him.
That's not to say that he isn't Jaden's harshest critic; as a studious kid, Syrus is always quick to criticize Jaden before he fully sees what the protagonist is all about.
2 Dragon: Chazz Princeton
Chazz Princeton is the privileged hot-head of the series, making him the perfect candidate for the Dragon sign. At his most surface level, Chazz is as materialistic and arrogant as they come, looking at "good cards" and status to define himself. Yet, that isn't to say that Chazz isn't a good duelist.
He's one of the most sadistic and unforgiving players around. It's only after joining North Academy that his best traits would truly shine through, as he mastered playing with virtually any deck—even ones including the Ojamas. As one of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series' best villains and a character with a deep arc, Chazz Princeton has shown time and again why he is the best.
1 Goat: Jaden Yuki
Jaden Yuki isn't just the "Greatest of All Time" relative to the duelists of his series, but his sincerity and playfulness also make him the prime candidate for the Goat sign. Not minding his status as a Slifer one bit, Jaden is easily the most relaxed kid in the entire school, though this is often to his academic detriment.
Even at the cost of his education, Jaden has proven to the students and teachers that his creativity and skill are his most powerful weapons and can stand to any duelist. That same impulsion that makes him a slacker is also what makes him the most ambitious duelist in the series, taking on any and all challengers. Knowing more about the spirit of the game than anyone else, Jaden is seriously in tune with his most used Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, and he's a fantastic series lead.
