Looking to make significant advancements in mobile camera zoom technology, Oppo has developed a new continuous optical zoom system. The company often shows off prototypes and interesting technology solutions, and with optical zoom on mobile devices not quite at a professional level yet, it's only fitting that Oppo is attempting to solve the problem.
Traditionally, professional cameras come with the option to switch out lenses, whether the photographer needs a zoom lens at something like 135mm or a portrait lens at 50mm. Unfortunately, for the longest time, mobile phones didn't have much of an option when it came to zooming with clarity. Over time, companies have started adding more elements to the mobile camera, beefing it up in order to take farther away photos without sacrificing detail.
During its latest event, Oppo announced a new optical zoom system that maintains high levels of detail over a wide focal length. With multiple lenses positioned on a long-stroke precision guiding shaft motor for high stability when zooming, the new zoom array can achieve a range anywhere from 85mm to a 200mm. This allows the use of just the one camera for just about any situation other than wide-angle shots. By using super-thin aspheric glass lenses as the main two elements and other plastic lenses, light dispersion is reduced as well. In image samples shown during the event, the difference in clarity is pretty clear. At far away distances, detail is better maintained in the photos.
Another important improvement made to camera systems is better OIS. Optical Image Stabilization is incredibly important for phones and especially considering how often people take photos while on the go these days. Oppo has once again taken inspiration from professional systems and has developed a five-axis OIS for smartphones. By incorporating adjustments for lens shift, sensor roll, and sensor shift, the company claims to have improved image quality and stabilization while maintaining a small form factor.
Unsurprisingly, Oppo also touched on its under-display camera tech during the event. This new development by the company allows for an almost invisible front-facing camera under the display that doesn't seem to skimp on selfie quality. Oppo did not mention when the new continuous optical zoom system would make its way to a device that consumers can buy so the wait for this new smartphone zoom solution will go on for now, but the new OIS system is expected to be commercialized by the first quarter of 2022.
