Doctor Strange's Magic Is So Powerful It Threatens The World

Spoilers ahead for Defenders #1!

In recent months, Doctor Strange’s magic has grown more and more powerful, so much so that it threatens the Earth. In Defenders #1, on sale now in print and digital, Doctor Strange must hastily assemble a new team of Defenders to stop a threat on a magnitude never before seen. The situation calls for powerful magic, and Doctor Strange is up to the task - though he almost destroys the planet in the process.

The last year of Doctor Strange’s life has been one of his most tumultuous. In addition to summoning a new Defenders team, Strange is also heading up the Savage Avengers team. Doctor Strange also embarked on an ill-advised, but thankfully short-lived, affair with Captain Marvel. He has also opened Strange Academy, where he and his fellow sorcerers train the next generation of magic users. Now, Doctor Strange’s arrogant tendencies, long tempered by his accident and magical training, are resurfacing, leading to carelessness and questionable actions; for instance, Doctor Strange has kept Shuma-Gorath, an extremely powerful magical diety, imprisoned in his house—part of his scheme to topple Kulan Gath. Strange’s arrogance and growing power collide in Defenders #1, by Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez, with inks by Alvaro Lopez and letters by Joe Caramagna.

As Doctor Strange begins the process of assembling the new Defenders, he makes the comment that his magic has grown stronger over the years and that he must be careful. Readers see why when he uses the Tarot of the Secret Flame cards and they receive a power boost from Strange’s magic - that also increases the odds of something bad happening. Sure enough, it doesn't take long for the bad news to roll in. One of the Defenders Strange selects is Cloud, a living nebula bigger than Earth’s sun. The spell is pulling Cloud to Earth, and Strange must quickly teleport her away.

Doctor Strange is successful in moving Cloud away from Earth, and the Defenders are eventually complete. Still, the fact remains that Doctor Strange willingly used a magical tool with the capability to destroy worlds. While it can be argued that Doctor Strange was justified in doing so - reality wass being threatened by forces more powerful than Galactus after all, could he not have picked a less dangerous method? Doctor Strange literally played the hand he was dealt, but with all of his vast knowledge of magic, surely there was an alternative that did not threaten Earth. Will his growing recklessness lead to more sorrow and destruction? And how will it play into his upcoming demise?

Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in the Marvel Universe, but he is also growing more reckless and out of control, using powerful spells with little regard to the consequences.
