Star Trek: Picard actress Michelle Hurd promises the love story between Raffi and Seven of Nine will continue into season 2. The second season of Star Trek: Picard was announced before the show even premiered, yet it has taken a bit longer to arrive than expected. Production was slated to begin last year, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed it back considerably. Picard season 2 began filming earlier this year and will premiere on Paramount+ in early 2022. Hopefully, the wait for season 3 won't be as long, as it will shoot back to back with season 2.
Naturally, much of Star Trek: Picard season 1 focused on Patrick Stewart's returning Jean-Luc Picard, but the series managed to include poignant storylines for other familiar faces as well. In addition to some cameos from Stewart's The Next Generation co-stars, Star Trek: Voyager fan favorite Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) became a prominent member of the Picard cast. Seven of Nine had an emotional arc throughout season 1 and, by the end, had appeared to find love with Picard's former first officer Raffi Musiker (Hurd). The two were spotted holding hands in the season finale, a moment that promised more to come.
Hurd confirmed as much during a recent appearance at Creation's 55-Year Mission Las Vegas Star Trek convention (via TrekMovie.com). The actress spoke about what drew Raffi to Seven and hinted season 2 will further explore the growing relationship between them. Hurd couldn't give away specifics, but she did say this:
"Well, first of all, Seven of Nine. Do I really need to speak on that? But for Raffi, for her to witness this woman who is powerful and strong and confident and bold and brave, and just fearless. I mean, I don’t know how everybody doesn’t just sort of want to fall in love with Seven of Nine? And Jeri Ryan is such a phenomenal person and actress and intelligent being and we get along so well. So you know, to, to explore that is, is a really cool thing. That’s all I’m gonna say."
The romance between Seven of Nine and Raffi came as a surprise to many. Though Star Trek: Picard had layered in some queer subtext for the two women, they didn't interact much on screen before their hand-holding moment in the finale. That's why the prospect of more development between the two in Picard's upcoming episodes is so compelling. Both Raffi and Seven are fierce women who have been through enormous struggles, which is perhaps what makes them work so well together. It also helps that Ryan and Hurd have natural chemistry that helped inspire Picard's creatives to put them together.
Even with little known about Picard's sophomore run, it's already certain there will be major obstacles ahead. The official trailer for Picard season 2 revealed the characters will be dealing with a broken timeline, and the most shocking moment of all showed a Seven who didn't have any Borg implants. It also hinted that, in whatever timeline she's ended up in, Seven is married. Could she be Raffi's wife? Or is something else at play? Fans will just have to wait and see what Star Trek: Picard has in store for this budding couple.
Star Trek: Picard season 2 premieres on Paramount+ in 2022.
