Anya Taylor-Joy is learning how to drive so she can do her own stunts in the Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff Furiosa. Charlize Theron first brought the character of Furiosa to life in 2015’s epic Fury Road. But for the spinoff, Taylor-Joy takes over to portray a younger version of the post-apocalyptic warrior.
Details on Furiosa are naturally being kept under tight wraps but the movie will feature legendary director George Miller back behind the camera once again. After Fury Road shot in Namibia, the spinoff sees Miller bringing the circus back to Australia where it all began with his 1979 cult classic Mad Max. However, Tom Hardy will not be back as Max Rockatansky as the series entirely shifts focus to Furiosa, telling the character’s tragic origin story. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II join Taylor-Joy in the cast.
Of course no Mad Max movie would be complete without insane vehicle-related action and it seems Furiosa will be no different. In an LA Times profile on Taylor-Joy, mention was made that the actress is in the process of learning to drive so she can do most of her stunts. Naturally, she was reluctant to elaborate further on her role in the movie, saying only “I’m trying not to get in trouble!” Miller’s own stunt team is teaching Taylor-Joy the ropes so she can fully embody the character of Furiosa.
It makes sense of course that stunt driving would be a big part of the job for Taylor-Joy as Furiosa. In Fury Road, the character drove a War Rig and indeed had ascended to become post-apocalyptic overlord Immortan Joe’s greatest warrior. But Furiosa would betray Immortan Joe by springing his wives and blazing off into the desert, leading to the epic extended chase at the center of the movie’s action. The younger Furiosa apparently is already a badass behind the wheel and clearly Taylor-Joy wants to do as much of the driving herself when the film finally gets rolling in front of cameras.
It’s really no big revelation to discover that young Furiosa is already developing her skills as a driver. It remains to be seen though what other aspects of the character’s backstory the film eventually touches on. In Fury Road, it was revealed that Furiosa was once part of a female tribe called the Vuvulani who lived in The Green Place. At some point in her youth, Furiosa was kidnapped from The Green Place and wound up serving Immortan Joe. Given that Taylor-Joy is in her twenties, it seems the film will likely cover the time of her kidnapping and her days with Immortan Joe when she learned to drive a War Rig and became an Imperator. Of course it’s hard to say with Miller as he’s never cared much about maintaining continuity from one Mad Max movie to another. It’s possible he’s invented a whole new backstory for Furiosa that doesn’t even really connect with what happened in Fury Road. But either way, it’s certain Furiosa will be filled with action, crazy driving stunts and colorfully-named characters.
