Gilmore Girls is known for its unbreakable bond between mother and daughter, but it's also known for its relationships and friendships. The close-knit town of Stars Hollow brings the entire series together. However, as fantastic as the series is, there are quite a few things that fans would like to change.
While the show handed fans plenty of plot twists and changes, Reddit has a few plot changes they wouldn't mind adding themselves. These subtle twists could have changed the entire outcome of the series and gave the likes of Rory, Lorelai, and Luke completely different endings. But would that have been a bad thing?
10 A Lorelai And Luke Pregnancy Scare That Wasn't A Scare
During Lorelai and Luke's relationship timeline, Lorelai randomly got a craving for an apple. For anyone else, the craving wouldn’t have set anything off, but for Lorelai, it was a pregnancy craving.
As a woman who preferred packaged foods to fruit, Lorelai was freaked out at the thought of her being pregnant again. She ended up not being pregnant by the end of the episode, but Reddit user Cheddarmitelyfe wished things were different. “I wish that Lorelai had actually gotten pregnant rather than a scare in the episode where Martha was born," they said.
9 What Would Change If Rory Wasn't The Golden Child?
One of the biggest things Rory has going for her is that she’s a smart woman with a good head on her shoulders who values education and working. It’s these things that her grandparents love most about her because she fits directly into their country club mold.
However, what if she wasn’t a goody-two-shoes? Jaylee-03031 raised a great twist on Reddit that fans wished they could see, saying, "I always thought it would have been interesting if Lorelai did get pregnant and had a child who was the opposite of Rory." Rory being a mini trouble maker and an extreme version of a miniature Lorelai could have changed the entire story between them and Richard and Emily.
8 A Wookie's Baby
In the Gilmore Girls reboot, Rory is in an international affair with Logan, she had a boyfriend she kept forgetting about named Paul, and she had a one-night stand with a man in a Wookie costume that she met in New York. If that wasn’t enough for fans to wrap their minds around, Rory then tells Lorelai the big news: she’s pregnant. The news of her pregnancy didn't improve the original series by any means, but only left fans wanting another reboot. Many fans suspect that Logan is the dad, but LydiaPhelps98 thinks it could be a plot twist. “Rory got pregnant with the Wookie's baby in AYITL," they joked. However, at this point, it could be a strong possibility due to Rory's relationships.
7 Sasha, Anna, And Luke
The actress Sherilyn Fenn plays both Luke’s former girlfriend and baby mama, Anna Nardini, and Jess’s dad’s longtime girlfriend, Sasha. The actress wore a bandana and a wig to look different from Anna but fans caught on. And while they were completely separate characters, MadameLadyBongs likes the twist of "Luke [having] a kid with Jess's dad's girlfriend."
The "spicy content" that would connect Luke to his nephew's biological father would be a plot twist that no one would see coming.
6 An Extravagant Proposal By Luke
After Rory steals a yacht and moves into the grandparents' home because she wants a new life outside of Yale, Lorelai is at a standstill. The only person in her life that mattered at that time was Luke. Luke was just as livid at Rory as Lorelai was, which is what Lorelai found endearing. She loved how much Luke cared about her daughter, so she proposed to him on the spot at Luke’s Diner. The two became engaged and on a new path. And while that moment is a part of their story, WenLemonsHandYouLife has a plot twist in mind. “It would have been amazing if Luke's real intentions for wanting the Twikham house were revealed in front of the whole town and Lorelai, and he just got down on one knee right then and there." This twist would have pushed Lorelai's proposal under the rug.
5 What If Rory Called Luke Out For How He Treated Dean?
When Rory was dating Dean, she hated that her grandparents treated him differently because he wasn’t cut from the same cloth. She also hated when the town treated him differently when they broke up. But DiamondPittcairn threw a plot twist at Reddit that could have altered Luke and Rory's story. "I find it kinda odd now that the show never did confront Luke and Rory" over his distaste for Dean. The Redditor continued saying that if Rory shouted "You're not my father, stop acting like one!" at Luke, their relationship could have suffered tremendously in the show.
4 What If Emily Gilmore's Family Made An Appearance?
Sadly for fans, no one got to meet Emily Gilmore’s side of the family, but why was that? Bfm211 wished there was a plot twist consisting of Emily’s family. "I think it's very strange that they never introduced anyone from Emily's family. That would have been amazing," they said. Adding Emily's family could have been a curveball to those around her. They could have supported Emily and backed her up against Richard or Lorelai. Or, they could have been against Emily — similar to how Trix was. Either way, this was an opportunity missed for more of Emily's shady burns.
3 Rory Chose Marty, Not Logan
One of Rory’s first friends at Yale (outside of her roommates) was Marty. They were in the same classes and they kept bumping into each other. Sadly for Marty, Rory saw him as a close friend while he wanted more from their friendship. Rory was honest with Marty and told him that she saw him as a friend and had her sights on Logan. That was the end of Marty and Rory. However, Leica0000 wouldn’t mind a plot twist involving Rory choosing Marty over Logan. “I sometimes wonder if Rory and Marty as a couple would have been a good comedy couple." They continued noting how important it was for Rory to choose Logan in that episode but selecting Marty would have been a twist no one saw coming.
2 What If Rory Changed Professions In The Reboot?
It’s been said since season 1 of Gilmore Girls when Rory was in multiple scenes at Chilton that she wanted to be a famous journalist. She wanted to travel the world and see the news for herself as she’s reporting it. However, in the reboot, it proved that Rory wasn’t the successful journalist she’d hoped she’d be. CaptainMcPigeon wouldn’t have minded if the plot twist came in the reboot where Rory actually changed career paths. They would have had "her pivot into something real instead." Perhaps teaching at Chilton could have been Rory's destiny after all.
1 Rory's Words To The Wall Street Journal Got Back To Mitchum
After Rory made headlines for becoming the new Editor in Chief at the Yale Daily News, Logan’s dad (and Rory’s nemesis), Mitchum Huntzberger, took credit for her success and told The Wall Street Journal that he gave Rory her start. Rory was furious because he didn’t help her get to where she was at the YDN — she did it herself. She called the paper herself and tried to clarify the real story but nothing ever came of it. MiralW was hoping for an alternate ending where Rory called the paper for a "clarification on the impression that Mitchum gave her her start [and it] would've eventually gotten back to Mitchum and he'd be furious." Watching Rory and Mitchum go head-to-head over her career is something fans totally missed out on.
