1989's Field of Dreams is a beloved fantasy/drama that serves as a love letter to baseball, but where can it be found and watched online? Despite the baseball focus, to call Field of Dreams a "sports movie," as some often do, doesn't really do the film justice. Field of Dreams is at its heart a drama about the bonds of family, as well as the grief, nostalgia, and the yearning to relive one's past glories. The fact that elements like those are wrapped inside a blanket of America's favorite pastime is icing on the cake.
A critical darling, Field of Dreams earned $84 million at the box office on a budget of $15 million, a tidy profit for studio Universal Pictures. Based on the 1982 novel Shoeless Joe by author W.P. Kinsella, Field of Dreams was both written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, and earned three Oscar nominations. Kevin Costner starred as baseball field-building protagonist Ray Kinsella, arguably his most famous role, although there are several contenders for that title.
Despite Field of Dreams' huge success, a Field of Dreams 2 has never materialized - outside of the famous Funny or Die short Lockout - and that's probably for the best. Some movies don't need sequels, and this is a prime example since the ending was arguably perfect. Still, Field of Dreams remains imminently worth watching, but unfortunately, it's not currently available to stream on any of the big three streaming services.
Field of Dreams isn't currently available to stream on either Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime, which will no doubt sadden many looking to relive one of their favorites or experience an all-time classic movie for the first time. While Field of Dreams has spent lots of time on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon in the past, it seems unlikely to show up there again, due to how fractured the streaming landscape has become.
While Field of Dreams isn't currently available to watch on any of the big three streaming giants, the movie is able to be streamed on Peacock. Users of Peacock's free offering can watch Field of Dreams at no cost, but with ads, while Peacock Premium subscribers can watch with less ads, and Peacock Premium Plus subscribers can watch Field of Dreams entirely ad-free. For U.S. users, Peacock Premium costs $4.99 per month, while Premium Plus costs $9.99. Field of Dreams' Peacock exclusivity will annoy many, but it makes logical sense since NBC Universal owns both Peacock and the movie itself. For better or worse, such studio exclusivity appears to be the future of streaming.
Field of Dreams can also of course be rented or purchased on all major digital streaming platforms, such as iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu. The average rental price for Field of Dreams is $3.99, and the average purchase price is $14.99. On most major services, those prices will offer the ability to stream the movie in either HD or 4K, depending on one's technical capabilities. Purchasers of Field of Dreams can also stream it using the Movies Anywhere app.
