Keeping Up With The Kardashian's Kanye West will distribute more than 1,500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to those attending his upcoming Donda listening party in Chicago. Kanye celebrated the completion of his latest album in Atlanta last month with some listening parties. Neither concert required a negative COVID-19 test nor proof of vaccination. That said, the second show at Mercedes-Benz Stadium did offer Pfizer vaccines on-site, but only four people out of the 40,000 in attendance took the venue up on their offer. Donda will be Kanye's 10th album, though it was been delayed multiple times from its original July 2020 release date.
It's possible that Kim Kardashian's soon-to-be ex-husband's personal opinions on vaccinations have changed. But Kanye once called them "the mark of the beast." At the time, he said he's "extremely cautious" about the vaccines. He went on to mention conspiracy theories that he seems to be believe in, including putting "chips inside of us" that won't allow people to make it to Heaven.
According to TMZ, it wasn't Kanye's idea to distribute vaccines at his August 26 listening party but rather the executives at Chicago's Soldier Field, where the concert will be held. Concert-goers who would like to get vaccinated will have the option of getting the two-shot Pfizer or the one-shot Johnson & Johnson. Those who choose to get their first shot of Pfizer, the vaccine that just got full FDA approval, will be set up with an appointment for their second dose with officials from the Chicago Department of Health, who will be on-site.
Michele Lemons, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Park District, hopes distributing vaccinations at an outdoor event is the first step in returning to a normal life post-COVID. "Kanye West's performance is one of many examples that show that Chicago can be open and safe at the same time," she told the Chicago Tribune. The Chicago Park District has been working with that stadium, as well as Wrigley and Guaranteed Rate Fields, to implement COVID-19 safety protocols. Part of those protocols include reducing the stadium's capacity from 63,000 to 38,000.
It will be interesting to hear if Kanye speaks about the vaccinations during his performance this week to see if his opinions have changed, or if he's just simply following the city's guidelines to continue with his event in the way he envisioned it. It will also be interesting to see if the easy access to the vaccines will encourage more people to get the shot. Either way, as Keeping Up With The Kardashians fans know, Kanye will do as Kanye wants to do.
