Shang-Chi Trailers Haven't Spoiled Every Surprise, Says Simu Liu

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has assured fans that movie's many trailers and teases haven't spoiled every surprise from his upcoming film. Scheduled for release on September 3rd, Shang-Chi was initially set for release in February of this year, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic which brought filming to a halt in Sydney. Now the film, which is the first Asian-led superhero film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to release this September. Shang-Chi will introduce a host of new characters and aspects as the titular character is dragged back into the clandestine world of the Ten Rings organization by his father Wenwu (Tony Leung), aka the real Mandarin.

Liu, best known previously for his role as Jung in Kim's Convenience, has been vocal on social media over the past few months, sharing his excitement to bring Shang-Chi to life. Last week, he took to Twitter to call out Disney CEO Bob Chapek after the executive described the film as an "interesting experiment." Liu made an emotional post on Twitter and Instagram refuting the statement and promised to make history when Shang-Chi eventually releases. He has similarly shared a great deal of gratitude towards fans who are excited for the film's release and have offered their support to the actor.

Not everyone has been as positive however. In response to a new teaser released by Marvel Studios on Twitter, one user argued that seeing the film at this point was fruitless as "most of the movie is revealed through so many different trailers." Liu responded to the user by claiming "Y'all haven't seen sh*t." You can check out the full tweet below:

While there has certainly been a great deal of material released to promote Shang-Chi, with a runtime of 132 minutes, it's hard to imagine that the entire film has been revealed. While the trailers have already shown off the return of both Benedict Wong's Wong from Doctor Strange and Tim Roth's Abomination from The Incredible Hulk, it's unclear how involved they will be in the plot. Sure, this may have spoiled what would otherwise have been an interesting surprise, but it simultaneously builds interest in the film as it adds another facet of mystery.

Likewise, fans are undoubtedly excited to see the Mandarin finally brought to life on the screen, and Marvel has done an excellent job of only teasing snippets of his full capabilities. The Mandarain has been a presence since the very beginning of the MCU, where his Ten Rings organization kidnapped Tony Stark on behalf of Obadiah Stane in Iron ManBen Kingsley played a version of the character in Iron Man 3however he was quickly revealed to be an imposter, but a bonus on-shot titled All Hail the King teased the presence of the true Mandarin. Shang-Chi promises to finally reveal the enigmatic character, and also make him a far deeper character than his initial portrayals in the Marvel Comics, with Wenwu's Mandarin being a mostly original creation. However, very little of the character and his motivations has been shown in the trailers aside from his confrontation with his estranged son.

With Shang-Chi promising some of the best action in the MCU so far, as well as Liu assuring fans that the there is plenty more to be revealed when film is finally released, it's understandable why there is so much excitement. Many mysteries remain unanswered, especially in regards to how far Shang-Chi will tie into the wider MCU and the events transpiring in Phase 4. Thankfully, there isn't long to wait as the film will release exclusively in theaters on September 3rd.
