Although Sons of Anarchy left little to no loose ends, fans have come up with a variety of theories over the years, including some that suggest John Teller knew he was going to die and went along with it. Created by Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy premiered on FX in 2008 and lived on for a total of seven seasons, coming to an end in 2014 after a lot of betrayal and drama inside and outside the title motorcycle club. Sons of Anarchy received great reviews throughout its whole run, with critics praising its story, themes (such as corruption and racism), and the performances of the main cast, particularly that of Katey Sagal as Gemma Teller-Morrow.
Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy in the fictional town of Charming, California. The series begins when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John “JT” Teller, one of the founding members of the MC, and in which he shared his plans and vision for the club, which were very different from those of the current President and Jax’s stepfather, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman). This sends Jax on a personal journey that leads him to question his path, role in the club, relationships, family, and more, and while JT wasn’t around to see his son take over the club, his presence was felt throughout the series, and the mystery of his death was left open.
John Teller was one of the founders of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original (SAMCRO) and President of the Club, earning the patches of President and First 9. JT settled the clubhouse at 1968 Fairfield Rd. in Charming and took over the automotive repair and garage business with Clay, naming it Teller-Morrow Auto Service. However, a lot of tension and conflict began to brew within the club, prompting JT to write his manifesto, but in November 1993, he was hit by a semi-truck and died two days later from his injuries. It’s later revealed in Sons of Anarchy that the ones responsible for JT’s death were Clay and Gemma, but fan theories suggest JT knew well that he was going to die.
Many Sons of Anarchy fans have shared their thoughts on JT’s death and what truly happened, as they believe there’s no way he wouldn’t have noticed his bike had been altered. Even Jury White, during his final conversation with Jax before he killed him, mentioned that JT’s motorcycle was “an extension” of him, so he would have known right away that something was wrong and wouldn’t have ridden like that, and suggested JT rode into the truck on purpose. Fans believe Jury was right, and JT killed himself as a result of the betrayal of Clay, Gemma, and the situation of the club and his family at the moment (months prior to his death, Jax’s brother, Thomas, passed away). JT could have seen his sacrifice as the only way he could help the club and his family, even if that wasn’t exactly what happened.
The theory of JT killing himself is somewhat supported by Jax’s death in the Sons of Anarchy finale, where he let himself be hit by a truck, mirroring his father’s death. Jax did so in order to save his kids from having the same fate as he, to save the club, and because per the club’s rules, he had to meet Mr. Mayhem. Sutter has shared that JT’s death was left a mystery on purpose, as “that was the existential drift that haunted Jax, and now you”. JT’s death being a suicide fits with what Sons of Anarchy revealed about him, Clay, Gemma, and the club, and it’s up to every viewer to decide what truly happened.
