X-Men Inferno Reveals Mutantkind's Greatest Threat | Screen Rant

New teasers for the X-Men's upcoming Inferno miniseries have teased the greatest threats to mutantkind include reincarnating mutant Moira MacTaggert. Jonathan Hickman's X-Men relaunch has long been teasing a coming inferno that would threaten to consume the entire mutant race, and that will begin in September.

Of course, the name "Inferno" is an important one in X-Men lore, the title of an event released in 1989 that shook the entire Marvel Universe; this time, the Inferno threatens to burn the mutant nation of Krakoa to the ground. As creative as Hickman's X-Men relaunch might be, nostalgia lies at the heart of it, explaining the event's title - and marketing is tapping into that as well, recycling adverts for the first event that featured three characters stood alongside one another. Everything old is truly new once again.

Marvel Comics has released three promotional teases for Hickman's X-Men: Inferno miniseries, warning readers Krakoa cannot trust its leaders, its allies - or, somewhat unsurprisingly, its enemies. Apparently, there are nine mutants who have secrets that could doom Krakoa: Magneto, Emma Frost, Charles Xavier, Colossus, Psylocke, Bishop, Mystique, Moira MacTaggert, and Destiny. Here are the teasers:

There are certainly some surprises on these teasers, not least the inclusion of Emma Frost and Bishop, neither of whom have given much indication of keeping secrets. Emma Frost is an A-level hero nowadays, and her driving motivation for getting involved with Krakoa was her commitment to the next generation of mutantkind. "For the children," she swore as she agreed to work with Xavier and Magneto. Meanwhile, Bishop is a time traveler, which gives him a unique perspective on Krakoa; in the past, his foreknowledge has caused him to go to extreme lengths, and it's possible he will do so again. What's particularly striking though is Destiny's presence, given that Xavier and Magneto have been quietly avoiding resurrecting precogs; it's possible Mystique will get her wife back after all, but that Destiny will have an agenda.

The most concerning detail, though, is the fact that Moira MacTaggert is identified by the teasers as an enemy of Krakoa. MacTaggert is secretly a mutant blessed with the power of reincarnation, and she has been working with Xavier and Magneto in the shadows for decades. Most readers have assumed Moira is in favor of Krakoa, but a close reading of Powers of X #6 suggests that she has a very different objective in mind. Covers for both Powers of X #6 and X-Men: Inferno #1 have shown Moira standing astride the bodies of the fallen X-Men, reinforcing the idea she is actually an enemy. If this is the case, though, she is the most dangerous enemy of all - a serpent who has always been whispering in the ears of Krakoa's leaders, one uniquely positioned to destroy them. Inferno really could spell the doom of mutantkind, with the X-Men caught unawares.
