10 Ways The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Was Going To Be Different

2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the film that both expanded the Andrew Garfield universe of Spider-Man and also killed it. It lives in infamy for having an absurd amount of plotlines that crowded a runtime that was not meant for that many stories.

Over time, more information about how the film and script were altered and changed along with deleted scenes that were officially released with the Blu-Ray has made fans ponder something interesting. How different would The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have been if director Marc Webb was given full control of the project?

10 Max Dillon's Mother Would've Been Included

There was originally going to be more development of Max Dillon before his transformation into Electro. This included his sickly mother who was completely removed from the final product. There is a deleted scene that can be found on the bonus features and is even on YouTube.

Max's mother treats him almost as poorly as other people do which already reveals more about his mental state. She either doesn't remember her own son's birthday or doesn't care. This hints that he's been emotionally abused since childhood thus leading to his extreme self-esteem issues.

9 The Spider-Boy Was Never There

Sometimes changes in mid-production can lead to good things. One of the few things fans praised was a small subplot featuring Spider-Man helping a young fan from bullies. The child returns at the very end during the memorable confrontation with Rhino when Spider-Man returns to action.

In the original script, that boy did not exist and according to Andrew Garfield himself, the subplot was his idea and he managed to get it worked into the movie. This shows that Andrew Garfield knew the character of Spider-Man so well, showcasing the fact that Spider-Man will help out anyone in need.

8 There's A Body Horror Transformation Scene

In another deleted scene, Harry Osborn's transformation into the Green Goblin was going to be much darker. His body contorts and twists with his shoulder blades morphing in disturbing ways, his teeth lengthening, and it's all shot, edited, and lit up akin to a scene from a horror film.

Though it's not as drastic of a difference, the body horror would have left more of an impact on the viewers due to its graphic nature. It also would have continued the trend of Spider-Man villains having terrifying scenes in every Spider-Man movie.

7 Menken's Death Was To Be Seen

Colm Feore's Menken is another antagonist that suffered from the overstuffed plot. Originally, viewers were supposed to see him die at the hands of Green Goblin but instead, he just vanishes from the final product. This is actually another deleted scene that can be viewed on YouTube.

Harry in his final Green Goblin form attacks Menken then flies him up to the top of OsCorp tower only to drop him to his death. This would have been a better way to introduce Green Goblin and his homicidal tendencies rather than a last-second encounter with Peter.

6 Peter Nearly Killed Harry

One of Andrew Garfield's strongest moments as Spider-Man is his heart-breaking performance of seeing Gwen die in his arms. According to comicbook.com, it turns out that this scene was going to be much longer and darker. Green Goblin was supposed to laugh at Gwen's death which sets Peter off.

Peter was supposed to embrace his dark side by pummeling and throwing Harry around the clock tower, embracing his inner Punisher to the point of nearly killing Harry. This scene was, sadly, not released but production photos of the scene are out there that only make fans wish Marc Webb got a director's cut.

5 Electro's Rage At His Mom's Schemes

Electro's mother was going to make another appearance that would have further progressed Max's madness. According to International Business Times, Electro would have returned to his apartment to discover that not only was his mother was able to walk but she was getting money from his death.

This would have set Electro off in a rage that led him to his epic confrontation with Spider-Man in Times Square. It's another scene that would have added more to Electro's character, showing trauma build-up to the point of sending him almost over the edge. His hatred and rage against Spider-Man when he thinks Spider-Man betrays him would have made more sense.

4 The Venom Symbiote Was Around

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tries its hardest to set up the Sinister Six for a follow-up with Rhino, Green Goblin, with teases of Doc Ock, Vulture, and more. However, one teased villain only made his way into the marketing for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

In one of the trailers, in the same room containing Sinister Six weapons, there is a canister with the Venom symbiote. In the finished product, this symbiote is nowhere to be seen but this hints that possibly Peter's loss would have made him the perfect target for the symbiote due to his overwhelming grief and anger.

3 Gwen's Extended Death

Some might consider Gwen's instantaneous death to be more poignant and impactful hence why it is a praised scene. However, there were supposed to be final words from Gwen according to International Business Times as she dies in Peter's arms.

She tells Peter to not give up which would have reflected her father's death in The Amazing Spider-Man. There is no footage of this one either, sadly, but it would have further shown Gwen Stacy to be the perfect love interest for Spider-Man.

2 Mary Jane Watson

It's somewhat infamous at this point that Mary Jane Watson was not only going to be in it but her scenes were filmed with Shailene Woodley cast as the character. According to International Business Times, Mary Jane was going to be a new neighbor next door with an abusive drunken father.

Not only does she build motorcycles as a hobby, but she also idolizes Spider-Man; even to the point of having a Spider-Man tattoo. This would have led to Peter confronting Mary Jane's father as Spider-Man, telling him to stop hurting his daughter. In many ways, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in need of a treatment similar to Zack Snyder's Justice League and the MJ scenes are a perfect reason why.

1 Return Of Richard Parker

Easily the most infamous deleted scene since it can be viewed is the alternate ending that can be seen right on YouTube. One day while Peter mourns for Gwen at her grave, he is approached by Richard Parker. Yes, his father is still alive and it results in a bittersweet reunion.

The two have a strong conversation about the ones they love but the most famous part of this deleted scene is that Richard Parker says the legendary line, "With great power comes great responsibility." Combined with words about carrying Gwen with him everywhere he goes would have helped inspire him to become Spider-Man again.
