9 Ways Marvel's Wolverine Could Be Different From Marvel's Spider-Man

The announcement of Marvel's Wolverine has fans all over ecstatic to know more about the game. As a result, everyone is speculating things like how it will play, will Steve Blum return to voice Wolverine, and how similar to Marvel's Spider-Man will it be?

As much as Insomniac knocked it out of the park with Marvel's Spider-Man, many hope that Wolverine does not play like a clone of that game. There is so much more that can be changed in order to provide a unique experience from Marvel's Spider-Man to make Wolverine's adventure stand out.

9 Open Wilderness Setting

Whether it's Batman: Arkham Knight or Marvel's Spider-Man, superhero games that take place in an open world are usually based in the city. With Marvel's Wolverine, it opens the opportunity to explore the Canadian wilderness with multiple rural towns to explore, mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, etc.

Games such as Days Gone prove that a forest setting can be an engaging and visually stunning aesthetic while still providing enough NPCs to interact with to create an immersive experience. This could also allow NPCs to stand out and be more dynamic than just random citizens that roam.

8 Include Vehicular Travel

Though Wolverine is a fast runner, he is far from a speedster. If Marvel's Wolverine provides an open world to explore and traverse, he's going to need a method to get around. There's always fast travel but the player will still need to get to certain places faster without running.

Comparing to Days Gone again, Wolverine could have his trusty motorcycle or different cars and trucks found on the map similar to Far Cry games.

7 Allow For Character Customization

Most Marvel games tend to rely on unlocking different skins which work for the most part but it can pale in comparison to other games such as Injustice 2. That game allowed players to create the Batman or Wonder Woman of their dreams using a well-detailed gear system.

Why can't the same be done for Wolverine? Find and/or craft different gear pieces to equip onto Logan. For a nice middle ground, why not have alternate skins with changeable accessories, similar to the customization options for Mortal Kombat 11? Spider-Man allowed for plenty of alternate costumes but making your own would be welcome here.

6 An M For Mature Rating

Spider-Man is a mostly lighthearted superhero who tries to avoid killing so the T for Teen rating made sense. With Wolverine, it's a different story: he's a war-torn immortal who typically has no qualm killing villains in his way. Plus, those blades coming from his hands are not just for show.

Between 2017's Logan and the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game providing epically bloody experiences for fans, it would probably disappoint some fans if the gore is taken away. Plus Wolverine tends to fight mercenaries and murderers who deserve his claws.

5 Alternate Mission Paths

Marvel's Spider-Man provides a now-beloved story with lots of fun and engaging side quests, there is no denial about that. However, once someone has played through all of the story and side quests once, there is nothing else to them upon replaying the game. Even the Arkham games' best side quests suffered this despite being just as fun.

Since Wolverine is a darker and more brutal hero but with a good heart, he can be presented with a choice as to whether or not a certain character or villain should die. This can change his relationships with people around him and have dynamic changes to the map as well as more replayability. Romance options are a popular thing amongst gamers so that could be implemented as well.

4 Wolverine's Movement In Gameplay

Both Spider-Man and Wolverine are agile characters but that doesn't mean they move the same way. Wolverine should not traverse and fight in a copy and paste gameplay style as Marvel's Spider-Man. Spider-Man parkouring through the environment with grace fits him.

Logan on the other hand is a feral tank of a creature. His movement would be less parkour-like and more akin to how wolves and other predators move: fast and with ferocity. The same with combat: he relies on his claws a lot combined with decades of combat in his head along with his enhanced senses giving him a hand in a fight.

3 Other Playable Characters

There were several playable characters across the Batman: Arkham games whereas Marvel's Spider-Man only features one. Spider-Man plays perfectly but with the Marvel universe in their hands, there are so many potential characters. The closest gamers got were stealth missions with Mary Jane and Miles Morales that came off as tedious more than anything.

It's no different with Marvel's Wolverine since he comes from the X-Men mythos. Whether it's missions in the campaign or some kind of challenge mode, Marvel's Wolverine could introduce characters such as Beast, Gambit, Shadowcat, and Nightcrawler, who could all fight in unique ways.

2 Expanding The Marvel Universe

Other than some Easter Eggs, Marvel's Spider-Man stuck to being a standalone adventure without much connection to a wider Marvel Gaming Universe. Not that that's a bad thing but Spider-Man could have been the perfect springboard for characters such as Daredevil.

The same can still be said for Logan, there are so many Marvel characters that could be used in Marvel's Wolverine. Whether it's bosses, cameos, or references, Marvel's Wolverine could be the game to set up a plethora of other games set in this universe.

1 Explore Wolverine's Origin

Origin stories tend to be overdone which is why many were fine with Marvel's Spider-Man skipping the origin and making him a veteran with certain mentions to Uncle Ben. Here's the difference, not as many general gamers and viewers know Wolverine's story if they only base it off the movies which altered a lot of things from the comics.

Marvel's Wolverine doesn't have to be a complete origin story. It can feature a veteran Logan trying to hide in Canada but in that classic Wolverine style, he has trauma-induced flashbacks to his creation as Weapon X. Those flashbacks could be playable and/or cause Logan to hallucinate in the present.
