Andrew Garfield Fought With Sony Over Amazing Spider-Man Decisions

Andrew Garfield reflects on fighting with Sony over The Amazing Spider-Man decisions. After director Sam Raimi's planned Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire was cancelled, the studio rebooted the franchise, casting Garfield in the lead role. Even though Garfield's turns as Peter Parker were praised, the movies themselves were not as successful as their predecessors, and the series flamed out after just two movies. The Amazing Spider-Man 2's lukewarm performance paved the way for Sony to make a deal with Disney, allowing Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony had large ambitions for the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, using the second film to set up future installments in the series, including a Sinister Six movie. One of the biggest shortcomings of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was it was preoccupied with establishing the future, which ended up muddling the storytelling. From the sound of things, trying to figure out the top priorities for the movies was a recurring issue behind-the-scenes.

Speaking with Variety, Garfield discussed working on the Amazing Spider-Man movies, particularly taking the time to look back on his relationship with then Sony head Amy Pascal. Check out his comments in the space below:

“It was only beautiful. I got to meet Emma [Stone] and work with her and Sally Field. I had karma with Amy Pascal, who was a mother figure, and we would fight, but ultimately, we loved each other on a deep level. We tried to meet as much in the middle as we could in terms of why I wanted to do this role, and what her needs were as the head of the studio.”

Big-budget tentpole filmmaking typically consists of this kind of struggle, with everyone involved trying to find the right balance to appease all parties. It's a tricky tightrope to walk, and not every attempt is successful. Even Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy was a victim, with Sony pushing for Venom to be a villain in Spider-Man 3 (considered the weakest entry in the series). There's a lot riding on studio blockbusters, and everyone involved has their own ideas for the movie, so it isn't surprising Garfield had some back-and-forth with Pascal. Fortunately, it sounds like any fights or disagreements were amicable, with Garfield mentioning the pair's love for each other. It's interesting to consider what might have happened if there wasn't as much Sony interference on The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Garfield's time as Spider-Man was unfortunately short-lived. Despite the films' problems, he was seen as a highlight in both, and it would have been nice to see him bring his ideas to more installments had they panned out. Garfield continuously denies he's in this winter's Spider-Man: No Way Home, but he's been rumored to reprise his version of the wall-crawling hero in the multiverse story. Should he pop up at any point, it would be a great opportunity to give Garfield's Spider-Man the sendoff and closure he deserves - as his individual series was abandoned before it really started.
