Marvel fans know Captain Marvel is one of the strongest Avengers (if not one of the strongest superheroes in the Marvel Universe proper) - so much so that she's one of the very few characters who can lift Thor's hammer Mjolnir without being worthy. The Son of Odin's hammer has perplexed the Marvel faithful for decades; exactly how it determines who is and is not worthy to wield the weapon hasn't been specifically defined. But in Captain Marvel vol. 10 #16, written by Kelly Thompson with art by Lee Garbett and colors by Tamra Bonvillain, Carol Danvers clearly is not worthy of Mjolnir...and yet she lifts it anyway.
At the end of The Last Avenger story arc, the villain Vox Supreme has forced Carol to do his bidding - murder the Avengers - using a dark version of her costume. Unknown to Vox Supreme, Carol has hidden the still-living Avengers inside a pocket dimension called the Singularity, away from Vox Supreme's prying eyes, and presented Vox with clones of her targets instead. Carol plans to confront Vox while the Avengers rescue innocent Kree hostages whom Vox has outfitted with remote-controlled bombs. Captain America even gives Carol his shield - she'll need it more than he will.
Upon confronting Vox Supreme (who has also merged with the Kree Supreme Intelligence), Carol is imprisoned and hooked up to a machine that will grant her the power of all the Avengers - and thus controlled by Vox. She escapes but is doused in the DNA of her colleagues' clones, granting her a larger, misshapen form. Instinctively, she reaches out - and Thor's hammer flies to her hand. Carol instantly turns the tables on Vox Supreme, and using Mjolnir, seals Vox in the same machine meant for her.
In the aftermath of the fight, Carol realizes what happened: she temporarily carried Thor's DNA, and was thus able to summon and wield Mjolnir (when she "burns" out the poisons, Mjolnir no longer recognizes her). This is one of the very few instances in comics of the hammer being "tricked", along with Hydra Captain America in Secret Empire (reality was changed via a Cosmic Cube), and Rogue (who killed Thor and absorbed his power in What If? vol. 2 #66). Not many characters can truly fulfill the "worthiness" requirement; Odin, Captain America, and even Superman in a DC/Marvel crossover can all lift Mjolnir without resorting to trickery, but Carol Danvers cannot.
Captain Marvel doesn't truly need Mjolnir to function as an effective member of the Avengers: unlike Thor, she can both fly and use long-range attacks on her own. Still, when Carol needs an upgraded boost in firepower, a magical Asgardian hammer certainly comes in handy. Captain Marvel's foes often match her in sheer strength, so having a surprise advantage like Thor's hammer is the perfect way to turn the odds in her favor.
