Gemma Chan and Richard Madden get close in a brand new image from Marvel's Eternals. Although Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was delayed by over a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, new Marvel material is dropping hard and fast. The time has come to look forward to Eternals, the next MCU film on the docket now that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has premiered and broken multiple box office records.
Eternals, coming November 5, was directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao and features a massive cast of stars, including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Tyree Henry. The film will introduce MCU fans to the Eternals, a group of immortal alien beings who guide humanity. The film will take place following the events of Avengers: Endgame and see the Eternals regrouping to defend the Earth against Deviants, the creatures who were created by the Celestials who also created the Eternals.
Also appearing in the film are Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as Ikaris and Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians) as Sersi. Fandango has just dropped an exclusive image from the film featuring the two characters in a romantically charged moment. The image shows the two embracing in what appears to be the village from thousands of years ago depicted in the trailer for Eternals. See the full image below:
As evidenced by this photo, Ikaris and Sersi are in a romantic relationship. Although the two have different beliefs (Ikaris is apathetic and bored, and Sersi has a deep connection with the humans they have been sent to serve), they have a powerful love that has lasted over centuries. Unfortunately, being on either side of that divide has led to an on-again, off-again relationship and the film will set up a love triangle. At the beginning of Eternals, Sersi will be together with Black Knight, played by Madden's Game of Thrones co-star Kit Harington.
With so many Eternals to keep track of, it will be interesting to see how well Eternals is able to juggle its storylines. However, given the front-and-center prominence that Chan and Madden get in the trailer (and in this very photo), there will likely be a strong Sersi and Ikaris storyline running throughout. Fans won't have to wait too long for this next entry in the MCU, but in the meantime, more first-look images and clips will certainly be dropping to hopefully give a fuller insight into Ikaris, Sersi, and their teammates before the premiere.
