OnePlus reportedly plans to add Active Noise Cancelation (ANC), Dolby Atmos, and faster charging to its next entry-level true wireless earbuds. A few weeks ago, OnePlus unveiled its first pair of earbuds with noise-cancellation capability in tow. Priced at $150, the OnePlus Buds Pro massively undercut the AirPods Pro, despite taking some generous design inspiration from Apple's offering. The premium OnePlus earbuds also offer a sizeable $50 undersell bonus over the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro and have actually proved to be quite good value for their asking price.
A number of other Chinese manufacturers, including Xiaomi and Oppo, have launched budget earphones with ANC, but OnePlus’ entry-level true wireless earbuds missed out on the luxury. The vanilla OnePlus Buds and OnePlus Buds Z have focused more on aspects like bass output and battery life, with their low asking price proving to be a constraint when it comes to upgrades such as noise-canceling. Now that the competition is aggressively lowering the access point for an ANC experience, OnePlus appears to be finally ready for the challenge.
OnePlus Buds Z2 will offer the Active Noise Cancelation perk, ensuring a distraction-free listening experience, according to Max Jambor. However, users shouldn’t expect anything more than a very basic implementation of noise-canceling on the upcoming OnePlus earbuds, given their budget pricing. Brands such as Oppo and Realme have employed the same trick for their budget noise-canceling earbuds, providing users with a taste of what ANC feels like without spending the higher price tag. That said, the noise isolation — both qualitative and quantitative (in dB figures) — is nowhere near what premium earbuds like AirPods Pro and Sony’s WF-1000XM4 bring to the table.
ANC is not the only perk that the OnePlus Buds Z2 are borrowing from their pricier OnePlus Pro sibling. To complement noise cancelation, Dolby Atmos support will be available to enhance the listening experience. Likewise, an IP55 rating will also be a part of the package, which means the earbuds should be able to handle occasional water splashes and sweat exposure during workouts. Connectivity will be handled by the latest Bluetooth 5.2 standard, while color options are rather modest — black and white. The OnePlus Z2 is also said to offer fast charging support.
The tipster claims that 10 minutes of charging will provide enough juice for five hours of playtime. In comparison, the first-gen OnePlus Buds Z promised three hours of music playback with 10 minutes of juicing time. The earbuds are said to last seven hours on a single charge, while the charging case adds another 31 hours of battery life, up from the net 20 hours of the predecessor. In terms of the general design, leaked renders courtesy of OnLeaks showed the OnePlus Buds Z2 will look almost identical to the first-gen OnePlus Buds Z, except for a slightly more angled design around the ear tips. The OnePlus Buds Z2 will reportedly make their official debut next month, possibly alongside the OnePlus 9 RT, but there’s no credible information on pricing yet.
