Though they made for some exciting visuals, Simu Liu’s MCU hero should lose the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi 2. Possession of the weapons notably traded hands from Wenwu (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) to Liu’s character at the end of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. As a result, the Master of Kung Fu received an incredible upgrade for his fight with the Dweller-in-Darkness.
The Ten Rings organization that had been run by Wenwu for thousands of years was taken over by Xialing (Meng'er Zhang), but the Ten Rings themselves are currently being wielded by Shang-Chi. Now that they’ve recognized Shang-Chi as their new owner, the Master of Kung Fu is being described as a hero whose power is on the same level as MCU characters like Thor and Hulk. Given the capabilities of the Ten Rings, Marvel seems to be positioning Shang-Chi to be one of the most powerful members of the Avengers going forward. Armed with the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi should be able to do much more than just keep up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes if he’s on the team in Avengers 5.
Despite how much Shang-Chi stands to benefit from owning the Ten Rings in Phase 4 and beyond, Marvel should drop them from his arsenal in Shang-Chi 2. It’s true that the Ten Rings twist helped deliver a thrilling showdown by equipping Shang-Chi with the means to fight Dweller-in-Darkness, but there are a few major drawbacks to the character using them in battle. Arguably the biggest issue is how drastically they change Shang-Chi’s fighting style. He’s always been characterized as the Master of Kung Fu, so giving him the Ten Rings on a long-term basis risks him losing the most fundamental aspect of his character.
A big part of what makes Shang-Chi special in the movies and the comics is his ability to be a superhero regardless of the fact that he doesn’t actually have any real powers. With his unrivaled skills in martial arts, Shang-Chi can take down dozens of opponents, including super-powered villains like Razor Fist. This element of his character is similar to the appeal that Captain America has, as both are characters who can fight evenly with heroes and villains who have power levels that far exceed their own. Through most of the movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings perfectly captured that feel of the character, but Shang-Chi 2 can’t repeat that if he keeps the Ten Rings.
Also, it’s important to keep in mind that Shang-Chi’s martial arts background is responsible for the movie’s best action sequences. The excellent choreography and how the battles on the bus and the skyscraper were shot were among the movie’s highlights. Because of Shang-Chi’s kung fu moves, Marvel was able to make the movie’s fight scenes unique to anything else that’s ever been done in the MCU. But with the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi doesn’t really need to fall back on his martial arts skills. If he had the Ten Rings, these fights would have been much less spectacular and more like standard, superhero action. If Marvel finds a way to separate him from the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi 2, he’ll have more opportunities to shine as the MCU’s Master of Kung Fu.
