Deadpool 3 Could Top Brad Pitt Cameo With Tom Cruise Comic Reference

While Ryan Reynolds' recent sabbatical from acting has some wondering how this will affect Deadpool 3, the necessary pause could conceivably provide some extra time to arrange the one celebrity cameo that could beat Brad Pitt's blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance as the Vanisher in Deadpool 2 Tom Cruise. Because while Pitt's appearance was a great sight gag, Cruise has the added benefit of a prior comic relationship with Wade Wilson.

Following an early battle with his enemy T-Ray, Deadpool wakes up in Deadpool #34 inside a tube of liquid where a mysterious scientist is helping him recover while asking him questions about his past. Trying to learn about his current situation between flashbacks, Deadpool is shocked when he learns his new "friend" has not only captured his lover Death, but is also revealed to be Loki, who claims to be Wade's true father. The prodigal father persuades Deadpool to help him steal Mjolnir from Thor. When Deadpool eventually chooses to free Death and indirectly return Mjolnir to Thor, Loki punishes his betrayal with a curse, "Let thy life fall into ruin until thou dost seek thy father's forgiveness."

In Deadpool #38 by Christopher Priest and Paco Diaz, Deadpool's scarred face has been replaced by the handsome visage of "Thom Cruz." Originally believing it to be a malfunction in the image inducer he uses to disguise his true face, Wade learns that not only is this not a trick but that no matter what harm or damage he does to himself, his face heals back to the iconic Mission Impossible star.

Deadpool's frustration over Loki's curse is surprising, given he has long been traumatized by his injuries, but ultimately he felt that his true identity was being concealed, compounded by both innocent civilians and enemies mistaking him for the heartthrob actor. Deadpool isn't opposed to cameos among his fourth wall breaks and pop culture references, as seen in his films with famous actors. Although Logan's Hugh Jackman made a not-cameo in DeadpoolDeadpool 2's Vanisher exceeded that when the invisible character's death revealed him to be memorably portrayed by Brad Pitt. A cameo by Tom Cruise would be an unexpected nod to the comics, and double-down on the comic-accurate history of Ryan Reynolds playing Wade (Wade said his scarring made him look like "a cross between Ryan Reynolds and a shar-pei" in 2004's Cable and Deadpool #2, ten years before fans actually saw the actor in the role.)

Whether getting torn up by a legion of ninjas, getting a new apartment with supervillain roommates, or doing everything possible to lift Loki's curse, Deadpool remained handsome. The curse was eventually broken when Wade happened to apologize to a random man in a bar, implied to be his biological father by the conditions of Loki's spell. Tom Cruise's Marvel debut in Deadpool 3 is not only something that would pay tribute to the comics that helped build the fan-favorite character's reputation, but something unexpected and memorable like Brad Pitt's cameo surely was.
